It began at Atlanta University Center on February 29, 2024, and brought cast members and producers to campus communities to spotlight historically Black colleges and universities. Later coverage reported that the tour had taken place, but the available reports do not verify all ten stops or measure the tour’s impact.
What was the A Different World HBCU tour?
The tour reunited people associated with the NBC sitcom A Different World for campus visits, student panels and other events at HBCUs. Contemporary reports described a planned 10-city itinerary; a later account characterized the tour as having gone on the road during 2024. HBCU News’ announcement coverage and NBC News’ report covered the plan.
The series itself followed Denise Huxtable, played by Lisa Bonet, to Hillman College, a fictional historically Black college in Virginia. WTOP described the sitcom as a Cosby Show spinoff that ran from 1987 to 1993. WTOP’s report from the Howard University event provides that context.
Which cast members and producers participated?
Early tour coverage named eight actors: Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Darryl M. Bell, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, Glynn Turman and Sinbad. Producers Susan Fales and Debbie Allen were also named as participants. The reports describe the planned participants; they do not establish that every person attended every stop.

Which HBCUs were tour stops?
The confirmed locations in the available reports are a partial list, not a verified itinerary of all ten cities.
| Reported location | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Atlanta University Center, Atlanta | The announced kickoff on February 29, 2024. The center includes Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College. |
| Howard University, Washington, D.C. | WTOP reported on “Hillman Day at Howard” in April 2024. The event included a press panel followed by a closed discussion with students. |
| Montgomery area, Alabama | Early coverage named an event hosted by Alabama State University and Tuskegee University. |
The reports do not supply a reliable complete list of ten stops, all event dates or attendance totals. The first two early accounts describe the planned tour, while WTOP documents the Howard event: NBC News, HBCU News and WTOP.

Why did the cast visit HBCUs?
Coverage described the tour’s purpose as raising awareness and enrollment for HBCUs. Later reporting also cited connecting with fans and raising scholarship money as goals. These are stated aims, not evidence that the tour caused enrollment growth or a particular fundraising result.
At the Howard event, Cree Summer, who played Freddie Brooks, said: “This is a perfect moment for us to uphold HBCUs and put a spotlight back on them so that people know how vital they are to our community.” Jasmine Guy, who played Whitley Gilbert, said, “We are not a monolithic group of people.” WTOP reported both statements from the April 2024 event.

Broader figures cited in later coverage offer context, but they do not show tour impact. HBCU News attributed to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center a finding that HBCU enrollment growth exceeded overall undergraduate enrollment growth by more than six percent between 2021 and 2022. It also reported that Howard University undergraduate admissions received 37,000 applicants for the class of 2028, 12 percent more than the previous year. Those figures describe a sector-wide comparison and one university’s applications, respectively; neither isolates an effect of the tour. HBCU News’ later account discusses the tour and this broader context.

No reboot commitment was reported. Asked about the possibility at Howard, Darryl M. Bell, who played Ron Johnson, said, “Now, I say ‘never say never,’” as WTOP reported. That remark leaves the possibility open; it is not an announcement of a new production.

Is the tour happening again?
The cited coverage establishes a tour announced and carried out during 2024, but no new tour or current event dates. Readers looking for dates should not treat the original 10-city announcement as a current schedule. The full ten-stop itinerary and tour-wide attendance or impact figures are also not established by these reports.
