In a first-person Cosmopolitan essay, she describes her former husband Sam as one of her most important relationships, a close friend who visits every weekend.
Why Walter says her first marriage ended
In her essay, “Lisa Ann Walter on Sex After 60, Divorce, and Dating,” Walter writes: “We got divorced because he came out to me.” She says she did not want to remain in a relationship with someone who wanted something she could not provide: “I didn’t want to be in a relationship with someone who wanted something that I could not possibly provide.”
Those are Walter’s recollections of the end of her marriage, told in her own voice. They are not an independent account of her former husband’s private identity or perspective.
How their friendship works now
Walter says her first husband, Sam, remains among her most important relationships. She writes that he comes over every weekend and that their relationship is not sexual, while still meeting many needs in her life.
#1 Best Overall
She recalls a small farewell that captures their affectionate, unconventional bond: as he left after a visit, he said, “Bye, my sort-of wife!”
Her first husband and her second marriage are different chapters
Walter’s account concerns her first husband, Sam. It should not be confused with her separate second marriage. A 2023 Washington Post profile quotes Walter describing her first husband as her best friend and contrasts that relationship with her less amicable second marriage.
In a separate Backstage interview, Walter recalled that her ex came out to her while she was raising two young children and working on a second television show. That is context from another interview, not a precise chronology supplied in her Cosmopolitan essay.
