Interstellar did earn extended IMAX screenings—but “staying in theaters” describes dated engagements, not an indefinite run. In December 2014, 12 North American IMAX 70mm locations were scheduled to continue after the film’s wider domestic IMAX engagement ended. Ten years later, the film returned for a limited anniversary engagement that drew strong demand. Neither event confirms that it is playing now.
Did Interstellar’s IMAX run get extended?
Yes, in the United States and Canada in December 2014. Paramount and Warner Bros. said the film’s circuit-wide domestic IMAX engagement ended December 14, but 12 North American IMAX 70mm locations were scheduled to keep showing it through at least the weekend of December 19. The studios also announced that the film had passed $100 million in worldwide IMAX theaters during its original release. Why did Interstellar return to IMAX in 2024?
The 2024 engagement marked the film’s 10th anniversary. IMAX’s historical listing advertised a limited engagement starting December 6 in both IMAX 70mm and IMAX Digital. The listing is evidence of that anniversary release, not a current schedule. IMAX’s anniversary listing.
The return also attracted substantial reported demand. The Associated Press reported that the re-release earned $4.5 million from 166 screens in the United States and Canada. AP separately reported an average of $70,000 per theater across 10 70mm IMAX film screens. Added screenings filled quickly, according to the report. What makes the IMAX presentation different?
Paramount and Warner Bros. said more than an hour of Interstellar was shot with IMAX cameras. In IMAX theaters, those sequences expand to fill the screen; the studios also said that sequences shot on 35mm film were digitally remastered using IMAX DMR. This describes the film’s production and presentation, not a guarantee that every auditorium advertising IMAX uses 70mm film projection. The studios’ 2014 announcement.
IMAX 70mm film or IMAX Digital?
The two formats were both listed for the 2024 engagement, but they are not interchangeable labels: one identifies a film presentation and the other a digital one. If a theater lists a particular screening, check its format, venue and date rather than assuming all IMAX showings use 70mm film. The available historical listing does not provide a complete venue-by-venue inventory.

Is Interstellar still in theaters?
Current October 2026 showtimes are not established by the historical announcements and listings above. Check the official IMAX listing and nearby theater schedules for current dates and formats before making a trip. A past extension or anniversary re-release does not, by itself, mean the film remains in theaters today.

In the AP report on the anniversary re-release, director Christopher Nolan said: “It just shows our industry once again that audiences truly understand the difference between a communal, big screen theatrical experience that they crave even on films that they’ve had the opportunities to see in the home,” His remark was an interpretation of the response to this event, not a guarantee that future re-releases will perform similarly.
