Their award is the Academy Award of Merit statuette; the often-mentioned $1 figure is a resale restriction, not prize money or the trophy’s valuation.
How much money do Oscar winners get?
The Academy does not pay a standard cash prize for winning an Oscar. Its current awards rules do not list a cash payout or winner incentive, and a 2025 report by AS USA likewise reported that winners receive no cash incentive.
The award itself is recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and an Academy Award of Merit statuette. The Academy describes the statuette as solid bronze plated in 24-karat gold (Academy statuette information).
Why does the Academy’s $1 rule get mentioned?
The $1 is not an award payment or an estimate of what an Oscar is worth. Under the Academy’s current regulations, a recipient who wants to sell or otherwise dispose of a statuette must first offer it to the Academy for $1. The rule also applies to the recipient’s heirs and assigns. It is a condition on transferring the statuette, not a cash benefit for winning.

Do Oscar winners receive gift bags?
A gift bag is separate from the Academy’s award and prize money. AS USA reported that, for the 2025 Oscars, third-party company Distinctive Assets provided bags to nominees and attendees. The report attributed an estimated value of about $100,000 to the provider. That figure describes the claimed value of the reported bag contents, not cash paid by the Academy; the report does not establish that every winner received a bag.
The 97th Academy Awards took place on March 2, 2025, and the 98th ceremony was held on March 15, 2026 (2025 ceremony; 2026 ceremony). A report about a 2025 gift bag does not establish the contents or value of bags at another ceremony.

Does winning an Oscar lead to more income?
An Oscar may affect a recipient’s professional opportunities, but there is no standardized post-win earnings figure established here. The statuette’s material description and the reported value of a third-party gift bag do not show how much additional income any winner earns.
The Academy’s 99th Oscars rules were approved on April 23, 2026, and contain no cash-prize or incentive term (99th Oscars rules). That supports the distinction between the award and a cash payout; it does not quantify any indirect career effect.
