Incubus’ Brandon Boyd on Re-Recording ‘Morning View,’ the 2024 Tour and Lizzo

Incubus returned to the Malibu house where it made Morning View to record the songs as the band plays them now. Brandon Boyd discusses his changed voice, the 2024 tour and the limits of what is known about Lizzo’s Hollywood Bowl appearance.

Incubus revisited Morning View by recording the album again as Morning View XXIII, not by remixing the 2001 recordings. Brandon Boyd and guitarist Michael Einziger said the new version reflects how the band plays the songs now—and how Boyd’s voice has changed. Their 2024 interviews also addressed the album tour and Lizzo’s Hollywood Bowl appearance, though the available episode listing confirms that topic without establishing what happened onstage.

Why Incubus recorded Morning View again

Incubus made the original Morning View in 2001 in a rented house on Morning View Drive in Malibu. GRAMMY.com reported that it debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. More than two decades later, the band returned to the same house to record Morning View XXIII.

The idea initially struck Einziger as unnecessary. “When we first started talking about it, it kinda seemed like, ‘Why would we do this?’” he told GRAMMY.com. The answer was not to improve or replace the original, but to capture the songs as the members performed them in the present.

Einziger said the band noticed it played some parts differently than it had in 2001. Rather than force a note-for-note recreation, the members recorded the versions they had developed through years of playing the material. The 2001 album remains a separate recording; Morning View XXIII sits alongside it.

Boyd described the original’s enduring atmosphere without framing the return as a competition with it: “For whatever reason, I never felt like we had to come up with something better or else it’d all be over.”

How the new recording reflects Boyd’s changed voice

Boyd initially expected to sing as close to the original as he could. He then recognized that trying to reproduce his 25-year-old voice would not fit the person he was when the band made the new recording. “I’m 48 and I was 25 when we made that record. I might as well be a different person,” he told SPIN in May 2024.

In that interview, Boyd said two broken-nose incidents had left him with a deviated septum. He said he had adapted to singing with it, then underwent surgery in late 2019. The surgery changed his breathing, he said, and he had to relearn how to sing. This is Boyd’s account of his own experience, not medical guidance.

SPIN quoted him describing the result as “a saltier version of the original.” He also characterized the new recording as connected to, but distinct from, its predecessor: “It still has some of the original spirit and original ethos and original conversation, just with 25-plus years of touring on the back of it.”

What returning to the songs felt like

Boyd said the songs had become more difficult to perform live as his voice and body changed. Regaining breath capacity after surgery made singing them feel invigorating, he told GRAMMY.com. The return was not simply an exercise in nostalgia: the band found that the material still had energy for them. “There’s this feeling of, ‘Oh wow, there’s still a lot of life in this,’” Boyd said.

Boyd and Einziger described making the record as enjoyable and renewing. Their comments point to two linked reasons for revisiting it: the songs had evolved in performance, and the musicians wanted a recording that reflected that present-day relationship rather than an attempt to recreate an earlier moment.

The 2024 tour and the Lizzo discussion

In 2024, Incubus presented the Morning View material as part of a tour celebrating the album alongside the band’s hits. GRAMMY.com’s May 2024 interview covered the tour and its pairing with Coheed and Cambria. That is historical context, not confirmation of current dates or ticket availability.

A May 29, 2024 episode of The Allison Hagendorf Show featuring Boyd, Einziger and bassist Nicole Row listed the reimagined album, the arena tour and Lizzo’s Hollywood Bowl performance among its discussion topics. A search-result summary for a Rolling Stone interview also identified Lizzo and the Hollywood Bowl as subjects, but the underlying page was not accessible. These sources establish that the story was discussed; they do not provide enough verified detail to recount how Lizzo joined Incubus, what song she performed or what happened backstage.

How to think about the two albums

The distinction is between a 2001 studio document and a new recording shaped by the band’s later performances. The available interviews describe the musicians’ intentions and perspectives, not a consensus verdict about which version is better.
