In SNL50: The Anniversary Special’s “Scared Straight” sketch, Will Ferrell joins Kenan Thompson and Eddie Murphy as an ex-con trying—and failing—to frighten a group of teenagers. Ferrell’s story turns on the wholesome image associated with his film Elf, twisting it into a dirty joke without making the teens’ supposed lesson in crime prevention any more convincing.
What happens in the SNL 50 “Scared Straight” sketch?
Three ex-cons, played by Kenan Thompson, Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell, face a group of teens portrayed by Mikey Day, Marcello Hernández and Michael Longfellow. The setup promises a familiar “scared straight” intervention: the adults are meant to warn the teens away from crime by making prison sound terrifying.

The reversal is that the ex-cons’ attempts to intimidate the teens are the comedy. Their stories draw on recognizable movie plots and personas, which undercut the tough-guy act instead of strengthening it. Peacock’s official sketch guide identifies the cast and describes the setup; contemporaneous Associated Press coverage, republished by CBS News, adds context about the film references.
Why Ferrell’s “Elf” association makes the joke work
Ferrell’s part plays against the familiar, broadly wholesome image of Buddy from Elf (2003). The sketch uses that contrast to make his supposed criminal menace feel absurd: rather than recounting a grim cautionary tale, he connects his story to the movie in a sexually suggestive way. The joke is the collision between the cozy holiday-film association and the dirty turn—not a verified line that needs to be repeated verbatim.

The movie reference is also part of the sketch’s wider pattern: the ex-cons try to sound dangerous, but familiar screen stories make their performances feel increasingly ridiculous. That mismatch carries the premise more than any realistic account of prison life.
