What Jason Carter said in June 2024
In an interview with Southern Living published June 7, 2024, Jason Carter described his 99-year-old grandfather’s condition during hospice care in Plains. Jason said Carter was no longer awake every day and that there had been “really” no change in his condition at that point. Us Weekly reported the remarks on June 11; WSB-TV also covered the update that day.

Jason framed the uncertainty personally: “I told him, I said: ‘Pawpaw, you know, when people ask me how you’re doing I say, ‘Honestly, I don’t know,’” he recalled. Jason said Carter smiled and replied, “I don’t know, myself.”
What the report did—and did not—establish
The wakefulness description was a family account, not a clinical assessment. The reporting did not give a diagnosis, specify Carter’s sleep pattern, or offer a medical prognosis. It described his condition at that time; it should not be read as a current health update.

Carter had entered hospice care in February 2023, choosing to spend his remaining time at home with family, according to his official Carter Center biography. Jason also said, “There is no other place in the world that he would be at peace other than Plains.”
What happened after the June update
The Carter Center announced that Carter died peacefully at his home in Plains on December 29, 2024, aged 100. His son Chip Carter said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love.” The Center’s official announcement records the date and family statement.
