Abby kills Joel because he killed her father, the Firefly surgeon who was preparing to operate on Ellie at the Salt Lake City hospital. The series reveals that motive in Season 2’s premiere, before Abby kills Joel in Episode 2.
What Joel did to Abby’s father
At the end of Season 1, Joel takes Ellie from the Fireflies’ hospital. The Fireflies planned to operate on her in the hope of using her immunity to develop a vaccine against the Cordyceps infection. Joel kills the surgeon who would perform the operation; Abby later tells Joel that surgeon was her father.

That is the direct link between them: Joel killed Abby’s father while rescuing Ellie, and Abby comes after Joel in revenge for that loss. The planned operation is presented as an attempt to make a vaccine, not as a guaranteed cure or certain outcome.
Why Abby’s motive appears before Joel’s death
The HBO adaptation introduces Abby as seeking revenge in the Season 2 premiere, so viewers know her reason before she kills Joel in Episode 2. The Last of Us Part II, first released in 2020, withholds more of Abby’s background until later in the game.

Co-creator Neil Druckmann said the series’ longer format would otherwise leave Abby’s motivation unexplored for a long stretch. The game can connect players to Abby by letting them play as her; television cannot create that same experience of inhabiting a character through gameplay. Craig Mazin described the show’s alternative as building a connection through empathy and sympathy, and by linking Abby’s circumstances to events viewers already know.
The adaptation also changes details around the killing. TheWrap reports that Dina is Joel’s patrol partner in the show, rather than Tommy as in the game, so the episode is not a scene-for-scene reproduction.

What Joel’s death sets in motion
The show’s creators considered the timing, but Mazin said they did not seriously pursue moving Joel’s death much later; it was always going to happen as it does in the game. He told TheWrap, “We’re not interested in shock value. That’s not what we do.”
In the story, Joel’s death is the traumatic event that drives the season and turns attention toward what led to it and what follows. Druckmann describes Abby and Ellie as spiraling while trying to do justice for people they love. Abby’s motive explains the personal history behind the killing; it does not make the violence morally simple. Her revenge and Ellie’s pursuit of justice for Joel propel the consequences that follow.
