What is The Witcher about?
Netflix describes Geralt of Rivia as “a mutated monster-hunter for hire” who journeys toward his destiny in a world where people can be more wicked than beasts. The series, created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, expands beyond monster hunts to follow Geralt, the sorceress Yennefer, and Princess Cirilla—usually called Ciri—as their paths become intertwined. The show is adapted from novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. You can watch the series without having read them; the books are the literary source, not a prerequisite for following the television story.
Who plays Geralt in Season 4?
Liam Hemsworth plays Geralt in Season 4, replacing Henry Cavill. Anya Chalotra remains Yennefer and Freya Allan remains Ciri. Netflix also introduced Laurence Fishburne as Regis, a barber-surgeon with a complicated past. Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 update covers the recast and new cast member.

What happens in Season 4?
The season begins with the central trio separated, each pursuing a different course. This is the broad setup rather than a plot recap:
- Geralt travels with a fellowship of allies while searching for Ciri.
- Yennefer works to bring a coalition of mages together.
- Ciri, on the run, joins a group called the Rats.
Netflix’s cast and character guide and Season 4 guide describe these storylines. Season 4 premiered on October 30, 2025; Netflix reported on December 10, 2025, that all eight episodes were streaming. The season update confirms the episode availability.
How many seasons are there, and will there be a Season 5?
Netflix’s title page lists four seasons. The company has confirmed a fifth season, which will be the series finale. Netflix announced the renewal on April 18, 2024, and said Seasons 4 and 5 would be filmed back-to-back. The renewal announcement is the official source for that plan.
The official pages cited here do not give Season 5 a release date. No year or expected window is confirmed in those announcements.

Netflix says the final two seasons will adapt three Sapkowski novels: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake. That is Netflix’s stated adaptation plan, not a promise that every book event will appear unchanged on screen. The show’s creator and showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, said Netflix was “thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion”; this describes her stated aim, not an independent judgment of the adaptation. Netflix’s Season 5 announcement gives the book plan, and Tudum’s Season 4 update carries Hissrich’s comment.
If you want to read the novels behind the coming chapters, look for Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher books, including those three named titles. The television series makes its own adaptation choices, so reading the novels is an option for more of the world—not a requirement to watch.
