Need a nudge on NYT Connections puzzle #409? It was published Wednesday, July 24, 2024. Try the four hints below in order; the category names and complete answers are farther down, behind a clear spoiler warning.

How Connections works

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four that share a theme. Select four words and submit them as a group. You can play the official NYT Connections game.

Use these in order and stop when you have enough to solve a group. The clues move from the first category toward the fourth:

  1. You’re having a laugh.
  2. Finger lickin’ good.
  3. Awww, cute!
  4. Out of my way!

Spoiler warning: categories and answers below

Why the groups can be easy to miss

The puzzle’s words invite more than one association. KID can mean a young animal or to joke with someone, while RIB can name a body part or food—or mean to tease as a verb. Those alternate meanings connect KID and RIB to the joking group rather than the baby-animal or food interpretations.

THIGH and BREAST can suggest anatomy, but here they join TENDER and WING as poultry cuts. MUSCLE and SHOULDER also shift from familiar body-related meanings to verbs: in this group, they describe ways to push through a crowd.
