The video behind this identity-reveal story is a 2013 gross-out Harlem Shake comedy clip John made as Steezy Grossman, a year before he created Blippi. It shows that John had an online-comedy past distinct from his children’s character; it does not prove a sweeping claim about who he is today.
Who is Blippi in real life?
Blippi is a performed children’s character, not Stevin John’s everyday identity. John created the character in 2014. In an interview published by Studio Fun International, he said the idea came after he noticed his two-year-old nephew watching tractor videos that mostly featured music and B-roll. John wanted to make entertaining videos that also included learning about vehicles, animals, and other subjects. Studio Fun International’s Blippi interview presents this as John’s account of the character’s origin.
John has also described the difference between the performer and the persona: he said children have not recognized him in normal clothes, while parents of fans have. He said children can be confused when told he plays Blippi. Those are his observations in the interview, not independent audience research.
What is the Blippi video people are talking about?
VICE reported on February 15, 2019, that John appeared in a 2013 Harlem Shake meme video under the name Steezy Grossman. The clip featured gross-out comedy. It predates Blippi, which John says he started in 2014. The chronology matters: this was an earlier video made by the adult who later created and portrayed a child-facing character, not a Blippi episode.

VICE quoted John’s response to the attention: “As I told BuzzFeed, although I thought stuff like the ‘Harlem Shake Poop’ video was funny when I was in my early twenties, these days I’m really embarrassed that I ever did anything as stupid and gross as that.” That is John’s retrospective statement, as quoted in VICE’s 2019 report.
What does the old video prove—and what does it not?
The video documents an earlier piece of comedy attributed to John and a sharp contrast with Blippi’s child-oriented persona. It does not, on its own, establish John’s present-day character, private motives, or whether current Blippi episodes are safe or educational. Those are separate questions that cannot be answered simply by finding an old video.

VICE also reported that a copyright takedown request was sent to Google and quoted the request’s claim that a copy was unauthorized. That reporting does not by itself establish a broader claim of unlawful suppression, nor does it establish whether the original video remains available.

John has not been the only performer to portray Blippi in every context. In a separate matter, Inside Edition reported on October 15, 2019, that another actor had been cast as Blippi for the live tour. The tour website described the person as a “dynamic stage performer” cast as the character. Parents interviewed by Inside Edition said they had not understood that John would not perform when they bought tickets; one parent said, “I felt bamboozled.” That is a reported customer reaction, not a finding that the organizer deceived ticket buyers.

The live-tour casting is distinct from the 2013 video: one concerns who performed a stage version of Blippi in 2019, while the other concerns John’s pre-Blippi comedy. Neither fact means that every later Blippi appearance used the same performer. Inside Edition’s report on the tour covers the casting and parent complaints.
