March 2025 reporting says the court declined to award sanctions and ordered Brown to sit for a deposition. That request is separate from a 2022 sanctions award in a related dispute brought by Patricia Avila. The case later produced a nearly $12.9 million jury award, which was reduced to $9.5 million after the judge conditionally ordered a new trial on damages; Avila reportedly accepted the reduced amount in October 2026.
What sanctions did Maria Avila request, and what happened?
In March 2025, Maria Avila asked the court to order Brown to attend a deposition and sought $7,560 in sanctions over the delay, according to In Touch Weekly’s report, republished by Yahoo. Brown’s attorneys opposed the request, attributing the delay to scheduling and Brown’s move out of California. Reporting on the hearing said the court declined to award sanctions and ordered Brown to appear for a deposition. The underlying motion and hearing order are not available in the cited coverage, so the disposition is best described as reported rather than as a direct quotation from the judge.
The sanctions request did not establish that Brown had committed misconduct. The reported outcome was that sanctions were declined, while the deposition was ordered.
Why is there a separate $1,203 sanctions ruling?
A December 16, 2022 tentative ruling in case 21STCV13947 concerns a different request by Patricia Avila, not Maria. It granted Patricia’s discovery-sanctions request and ordered Brown and Black Pyramid LLC to pay $1,203 each, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court tentative ruling. That earlier ruling is procedurally distinct from Maria’s 2025 deposition dispute; the two sisters’ requests and outcomes should not be conflated.

What was the lawsuit about?
Maria Avila’s suit stemmed from an alleged dog attack at Brown’s Tarzana home in December 2020. She sought $90 million in damages, according to In Touch Weekly. That figure was her demand, not the amount awarded by a jury.
How did the case’s damages outcome change?
Jury award
In July 2026, a jury awarded Avila nearly $12.9 million, according to the Los Angeles Times. The award was substantially below the $90 million she had sought.

Conditional reduction to $9.5 million
On September 30, 2026, the Times reported that Judge Huey P. Cotton conditionally granted Brown’s motion for a new trial on damages: Avila could accept $9.5 million or face a new damages trial. The Times said the ruling described the jury’s award as “excessive” and cited “insufficient evidence” for certain damages, including extensive permanent nerve damage and the value of future pain and suffering. Those phrases are the Times’ account of the ruling, not a direct quotation from the underlying order.
Avila’s reported acceptance
On October 1, TMZ reported that Avila accepted the $9.5 million reduction to avoid a new trial on damages. TMZ reported the reduced award’s proposed allocation as $3.85 million for past non-economic losses, $5.4 million for future non-economic losses and $250,000 for future medical expenses. TMZ’s report does not establish that the money has been paid or that all judgment, enforcement or appeal issues are over.

What happened with Brown’s deposition?
In June 2025, Avila alleged Brown was evasive during his deposition. Brown’s attorneys denied that characterization and said he had testified for five and a half hours. They said, “He was cooperative, respectful, patient, and honest,” according to Us Weekly’s June 27, 2025 report. These are opposing party positions, not independently established findings.
Case timeline
- December 2020: The alleged dog attack at Brown’s Tarzana home occurred.
- December 2022: A separate discovery-sanctions request by Patricia Avila was granted, with $1,203 ordered against each of Brown and Black Pyramid LLC.
- March 2025: Maria Avila sought a deposition order and $7,560 in sanctions; reporting says the court declined sanctions and ordered Brown to appear.

- September 30, 2026: The judge conditionally ordered a new trial on damages unless Avila accepted $9.5 million.
- October 1, 2026: TMZ reported that Avila accepted the reduced amount.
What remains unresolved in the reported status?
Acceptance of a reduced damages award is not proof of payment or, by itself, confirmation that a final judgment has been entered or that appellate and collection activity has ended. The latest located report on Avila’s acceptance is TMZ’s October 1, 2026 account; the cited reporting does not establish those later procedural or payment details.
