Spoilers for The Rings of Power season 2 finale. The finale confirms that the Stranger is Gandalf, but it does not identify the Dark Wizard. That was the mystery at the end of season 2; by October 2026, the showrunners had also ruled out Saruman and said season 3 would reveal who the Dark Wizard is.
Is the Stranger Gandalf?
Yes. In the season 2 finale, the Stranger says, “Gandalf. That’s what they’re going to call me, isn’t it?” The line turns the clues surrounding his identity into an explicit reveal. The Los Angeles Times’ October 3, 2024 interview with the showrunners reports that the writers had settled on Gandalf by the season 1 finale, then worked backward to plant clues, including the Stranger’s “follow your nose” line.
Co-showrunner Patrick McKay described the decision as a process of discovery for the character and the writing team. The showrunners had considered other possibilities from Tolkien’s lore, including Saruman and the Blue Wizards, before choosing Gandalf. Actor Daniel Weyman was told the answer during season 2 production, according to the Times.
Why doesn’t the season 2 finale name the Dark Wizard?
The finale introduces the Stranger to another wizard who appears corrupted, but leaves that wizard’s identity open. McKay put the story’s focus on what the Stranger himself is learning: “The Stranger is learning there’s another wizard out here, one who seems to be corrupted.” The showrunners described the Dark Wizard’s identity, history and corruption as matters for the Stranger—and the audience—to discover together. Vanity Fair’s October 3, 2024 finale interview likewise reported that the Dark Wizard remained unnamed.

So the finale’s withholding is a setup for a later story, not a secret name revealed in season 2. The character’s ominous role invites theories, but theories about who he is are speculation rather than an answer established by that finale.
What changed after the finale?
In a 2026 report from San Diego Comic-Con, the showrunners said the Dark Wizard is not Saruman and that his identity would be revealed in season 3. GamesRadar+ reported those comments before the season premiered. As of October 4, 2026, season 3 had not yet premiered; GamesRadar+ reported that its first four episodes were scheduled for November 11, 2026. The eventual identity is not established here, so it should not be presented as known.

When did season 2 arrive, and where is the series set?
The Rings of Power is set in Middle-earth’s Second Age. Season 2 premiered on August 29, 2024, and its finale debuted October 3, 2024. Amazon’s season 2 announcement names Prime Video as the streaming service.
