Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom—not as Tony Stark or Iron Man—in Avengers: Doomsday. Disney currently lists the film for US theaters on December 18, 2026.
Is Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom?
Yes. Marvel announced Downey’s casting at its San Diego Comic-Con presentation on July 27, 2024. Disney identifies his role as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, a new MCU role for the actor, who previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man. Downey joked at the reveal, “New mask, same task,” and said, “What can I tell you? I like playing complicated character.” Marvel’s announcement introduced the casting.
Is Doctor Doom Tony Stark?
No connection has been confirmed. Disney’s guide to the film describes theories linking Doom and Stark as speculation; it does not say Doom is Stark, a Stark variant, or a relative. The confirmed information is that Downey previously portrayed Stark and is now cast as Doom. Disney’s film guide makes that distinction explicit.
When does Avengers: Doomsday come out?
Disney’s current listing gives a US theatrical release date of December 18, 2026, and promotes the film as an exclusive theatrical release. The May 2026 date cited in the original 2024 announcement is outdated. Release schedules can change, so the current Disney movie page is the date to check for the latest listing.

Who is making the film, and what is the story?
The Russo brothers—Anthony and Joe Russo—are directing. Disney’s 2024 announcement named Stephen McFeely as screenwriter and said the Russos would also helm Avengers: Secret Wars. Joe Russo later described the challenge of making the two films to the Associated Press: “When you’re doing one of these movies it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done,” and, “When you’re doing two of them, it’s almost inconceivable.” AP published that interview on September 2, 2026. Read the AP report.
Disney’s official synopsis says universes collide and the Multiverse Saga enters its final chapter, putting heroes from three universes on a collision course. That is the confirmed premise; more specific plot claims should be treated as unverified unless Disney or Marvel confirms them.

What is the film’s production status?
In a September 2, 2026 report, the Associated Press said the Russo brothers were finishing work on Doomsday, including scoring and editing, while “soft prepping” Secret Wars. That is a dated update, not a guarantee of the film’s status at a later date. The AP account also includes Joe Russo’s comments about making the two films.
