It is a story-and-branding twist—not confirmation of every consequence the new name might have for the MCU.
What does the asterisk in Thunderbolts* mean?
The asterisk is resolved by the New Avengers reveal. Disney’s post-release account describes the twist and says the marketing involved retitling the film; Marvel’s official film listing also uses the title The New Avengers. Together, those sources connect the asterisk to the team’s new public identity rather than to a separate, fully explained symbol within the story.
Lewis Pullman, who plays Bob, called the post-release title change “unprecedented” in Disney’s May 8, 2025 article. That marketing choice echoed the reveal: the team known as the Thunderbolts is presented under the New Avengers name.
Are the Thunderbolts the New Avengers?
In the film’s ending and official post-release framing, yes: the group is publicly presented as the New Avengers. Director Jake Schreier’s D23 interview identifies the unconventional ensemble as Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker. The team’s identity grows out of the film’s events, but the reveal alone does not establish its permanent lineup or precisely how it will function alongside earlier Avengers.

How do Bob, Sentry and the Void fit into the reveal?
Disney’s account says Valentina Allegra de Fontaine orchestrates an illicit super-soldier experiment involving Bob (Robert Reynolds), then presents him as Sentry. His dark alter ego, the Void, threatens both the team and the wider world. That crisis is part of the story surrounding the group that emerges as the New Avengers; the asterisk itself points to the name reveal, not a guarantee about Bob’s future or the team’s powers and status.
What does the New Avengers name mean for the MCU’s future?
The new name gives these characters a more prominent public identity and positions them for continued MCU storytelling. Schreier said the film’s events support future storytelling, but his D23 comments focus on the characters’ outsider quality and their emotional connection, not on a specific sequel plot.

The name does not, by itself, confirm the team’s authority, public acceptance, permanent membership, or long-term standing beside earlier Avengers. The cited official material also does not spell out a detailed future plot or the legal implications of using the name. Those questions remain open unless separately confirmed by official material.
Schreier described the group as people whose lives had not turned out as expected, emphasizing connection, self-rescue, and helping one another. As he put it: “Then, the question is: What do you do from there? Where do you go? Do you retreat into yourself, or do you find connection in others and move forward through that?” That speaks to the film’s emotional arc; the asterisk’s direct answer remains the New Avengers reveal.
