Who was almost Darth Vader?
Orson Welles was a possible choice for Darth Vader’s voice. James Earl Jones recalled the story cautiously in a StarWars.com memorial, saying, “The rumor is that he thought of Orson Welles.” TIME later reported Lucas’s 2015 remarks as describing a choice between Welles and Jones; Lucas said Jones “won hands down.” Those accounts point to Welles being considered, but they do not document a formal offer or a completed casting negotiation.
Who performed Darth Vader on screen?
The role was split between performers. David Prowse wore the costume and supplied Vader’s physical performance; James Earl Jones overdubbed the speaking voice. The AFI Catalog says Jones’s voice gave the character a more “commanding” presence. Welles did not perform Vader in a released film.
Vader’s sound was not just a voice casting decision. The AFI Catalog also credits sound designer Ben Burtt with experimenting with approximately eighteen breathing setups using aqualungs and tubes, attributing that production account to Lucas. The character’s screen presence emerged from the combination of Prowse’s movement, Jones’s voice, and Burtt’s sound work.

Why did Lucas choose James Earl Jones?
Lucas’s reported description of choosing between Welles and Jones suggests that Jones was the preferred voice for the film. Jones later recalled that Lucas wanted a darker voice than Prowse’s and asked whether he would work for a day’s salary. In a 1993 interview preserved by NPR, Jones said the recording session lasted two and a half hours and that he was paid $9,000. Those details are Jones’s recollection, not independently verified production records.
Jones said he considered his contribution a form of special effect and did not take credit for creating the character. He praised Prowse’s work, saying, “David Prowse worked very hard to create Darth Vader…I take no credit for the character.” Lucas, in turn, called Jones “an incredible actor, a most unique voice both in art and spirit” in the StarWars.com memorial.

How certain is the Orson Welles story?
The accounts differ in how firmly they frame the decision. Jones’s own phrasing is explicitly tentative: “The rumor is that he thought of Orson Welles.” TIME’s report of Lucas’s 2015 remarks is more direct, presenting the decision as a choice between Welles and Jones. Taken together, they support the careful conclusion that Lucas considered Welles for Vader’s voice, not the stronger claim that Welles was formally offered or hired for the part.
