Netflix’s final-season explanation clarifies that the Upside Down is not simply a second Hawkins: it is a wormhole bridge connecting Hawkins to a separate realm called the Abyss. The Abyss is where Vecna and the other monsters come from. According to Netflix’s explainer, Eleven’s later contact with the Abyss formed the bridge.
So what is the Upside Down?
In the show’s early seasons, the characters understand the Upside Down as a dark, decaying reflection of Hawkins. That was a useful first explanation for what they encountered, but it was not the complete account. Netflix’s December 26, 2025, Season 5 explainer distinguishes the bridge from the world it connects: the Upside Down is the wormhole bridge, while the Abyss is the separate realm on the other side. Netflix’s official explanation says the bridge is unstable and held together by exotic matter.
| Realm | Function | Connection to Hawkins and its inhabitants |
|---|---|---|
| Upside Down | A wormhole bridge | Connects Hawkins to the Abyss; it is not the monsters’ home realm in Netflix’s final-season explanation. |
| Abyss | A separate world reached through the bridge | Home of the Mind Flayer, Demogorgons, vines, and Vecna’s other creatures. |
Ross Duffer told Netflix, “We’ve slowly been peeling back the layers over the seasons, but in our final season, we wanted to explain finally what the Upside Down was.”
How did the Upside Down form?
Netflix’s account connects the bridge’s formation to Eleven’s contact with the Abyss, not to Vecna creating it. The sequence, as the official explainer presents it, is:

- Eleven banished Henry Creel to the Abyss.
- Later, Eleven made remote contact with that realm.
- The Upside Down formed as the bridge between Hawkins and the Abyss.
Netflix also says Vecna did not create the energy sphere that holds the unstable bridge together. The distinction matters: Henry’s role in the events is central, but the origin of the Upside Down itself is attributed to Eleven’s later contact with the Abyss.
Where did Vecna come from?
Vecna is Henry Creel, who is also known as One. Season 4 reveals the identity and ties Henry’s story to Eleven’s past. The Duffer Brothers confirmed the Henry/One/Vecna connection in a Netflix interview. They said they had developed a mythology document during Season 1 planning, even though the series waited to explain those connections onscreen.

For the realm distinction, the simplest answer is that Eleven sent Henry to the Abyss; the Upside Down is the bridge that later formed between that realm and Hawkins.
How the explanation developed across the seasons
Season 1: A dark reflection of Hawkins
The first season introduces a shadowy Hawkins-like place filled with spores, vines, and monsters, reached through gates. The kids use Dungeons & Dragons’ “Vale of Shadows” to make sense of it. That language expresses their early understanding, rather than the final explanation of the realm’s mechanics.

Season 3: A gate as a point of access
Russian efforts to open a gate and weaponize access extend the story’s established idea that the realms can be reached through gates. They do not yet explain the bridge’s deeper nature.

Season 5: The bridge and the Abyss
The final-season explanation supplies the distinction the earlier seasons leave unresolved: the Upside Down is a wormhole bridge, and the Abyss is the separate world associated with Vecna and the monsters.

What does Vecna’s name have to do with Dungeons & Dragons?
The name comes from the villain in Dungeons & Dragons lore, but the show’s Vecna is not a literal adaptation of that character. The Duffer Brothers describe the tabletop figure as a loose inspiration and say the series character has a more complex story of his own. Their account also notes the playful timeline: D&D’s Vecna was not a character until the 1990s, while the show’s characters are naming a threat in the 1980s. The Duffers discuss the name and influence with Netflix.

Gina McIntyre’s Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down is described by its publisher as an official behind-the-scenes companion covering the first two seasons and beyond. It offers production context, but predates the final-season explanation of the Upside Down and Abyss; it should not be treated as a complete guide to the series’ final lore.
