The 2025 film’s nearly three-hour runtime is heavy with explanations and franchise callbacks; its biplane chase, by contrast, is startlingly clear and thrilling. That makes “one great stunt” a deliberately narrow verdict, not a claim that the movie has only one worthwhile action sequence.
A long setup, then a spectacular payoff
Released May 23, 2025, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning brings Tom Cruise back as Ethan Hunt. The BBFC lists its 2D version at 169 minutes and 32 seconds, while Rotten Tomatoes rounds the runtime to 2 hours 50 minutes. At that length, the film’s pacing is not a minor quibble: long stretches of explanation and revisiting the series’ past ask for patience before the action reaches its most exhilarating gear.
The Associated Press review, published May 19, 2025, praises the submarine and biplane sequences but criticizes labored exposition, flashbacks and story material that bogs the film down. The film’s central trade-off is therefore easy to identify: the action can be exciting even when the narrative path between set pieces feels overworked.
Why the biplane chase earns the superlative
The submarine sequence is a major piece of spectacle, and AP also singles it out. But the biplane chase is the film’s clearest candidate for its one great stunt: the danger is immediate, the geography is legible, and the images make the physical risk feel central rather than buried beneath plot mechanics. AP reported the planes travelling at 170 miles per hour (274 kilometres per hour) over South African landscapes; that is the review’s reported figure, not an independently verified measurement here.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AP’s review captures the payoff: “Saving the showstopper for last will certainly leave audiences exiting the theater on a happy high note.” The sequence lands because it comes after so much setup and offers a concentrated stretch of visual action. Calling it the film’s “one great stunt” is an argument about how decisively it outshines the surrounding material—not a denial that the submarine sequence is also memorable.
Does the story and farewell justify the runtime?
That depends on what you want from the film. If you enjoy franchise mythology and a sentimental sendoff, the elaborate setup may feel like part of the event. If you want a brisk, self-contained action story, the explanations and flashbacks can feel like obstacles between you and the set pieces. The BBFC’s content description points to dangerous aircraft situations and a diver in danger aboard a sinking vessel, but those hazards do not automatically make every stretch of the film equally tense.

Critical responses reflect that divide rather than a single settled verdict. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus describes the film as “Gargantuan in action, runtime, and scope” and calls it a “sentimental sendoff for Ethan Hunt” with the series’ characteristic flair for the impossible. AP is more pointed about the story’s loss of focus and the time taken to reach the showstopper. The disagreement is useful: the movie’s scale and farewell tone can work for viewers who value spectacle and closure, while its length and narrative clutter remain real costs.
Who should watch it?
- Watch for the action: The biplane chase is a strong reason to see the film, especially on a large screen, and the submarine sequence offers another major set piece.
- Watch for Ethan Hunt’s sendoff: Viewers invested in the franchise may find the sentimental farewell more rewarding than newcomers will.
- Skip it if pace is paramount: A runtime close to 170 minutes and a story weighed down by exposition make this a poor fit for anyone seeking a lean action thriller.
Watching at home
A 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD release is listed with an October 14, 2025 date. That establishes physical formats, not current stock or the contents of any particular edition; check the retailer listing for the format and features you want. Home viewing makes it easier to revisit the set pieces, though it cannot reproduce the scale that gives the biplane sequence much of its force.
