“Tron 3” is TRON: Ares, the franchise’s third feature film after TRON (1982) and TRON: Legacy (2010). It was released in the U.S. on October 10, 2025, and began streaming on Disney+ on January 7, 2026. Here’s what to know about its story, cast, home viewing and Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.
What is TRON: Ares about?
Ares is a highly sophisticated Program sent from the digital Grid into the real world on a dangerous mission. Disney describes the story as humankind’s first face-to-face encounter with artificial intelligence; as Ares experiences life outside the Grid, he begins to develop consciousness and conscience.
Ares finds an ally in Eve Kim, an ENCOM CEO and technologist searching for critical code written by Kevin Flynn. The two are pursued after Ares turns against his orders. That is the spoiler-light setup; it establishes a new real-world direction for the series without presenting the film as a direct continuation of Sam Flynn’s story. Disney’s streaming announcement and production notes describe the premise.
When was the film released, and how can you watch it?
Disney lists TRON: Ares as PG-13, with a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes and a U.S. theatrical release date of October 10, 2025. Its U.S. film page also announced digital availability on December 2 and Blu-ray on January 6. Disney said the film began streaming on Disney+ on January 7, 2026. These are U.S. dates; availability and playback options can differ by country, so check the local Disney listing or retailer.

What does the director say about the film?
In Disney’s production notes, director Joachim Rønning described the creative idea behind moving a Program into the physical world: “I wanted to design something new, but familiar. What drew me to the project was the mix of the digital and real worlds. Having a Program exist in the real world was interesting for me – I hadn’t seen that before. And the idea of Ares’ finding out what it means to be human, what it takes to be human, was fascinating.” Disney’s production notes
