Hearts Across the Sea is a free, 30-minute documentary about the Shetland Bus, the covert wartime route linking Shetland with occupied Norway. Released online in September 2026, it tells the story through people who remember the operation and families connected to its legacy—not as a comprehensive operational history.
What is the new Shetland Bus documentary called?
The film is Hearts Across the Sea. Promote Shetland describes it as a 30-minute documentary featuring Shetlanders Lexie Watt, Tommy Isbister and Douglas Smith, Scalloway Museum trustee Bill Moore, and Astrid Larsen, daughter of skipper Leif Larsen. It also includes footage from 2025 events marking 80 years since the end of the Second World War. Promote Shetland credits Claire White as producer and says Salmon Scotland co-funded the project. Promote Shetland’s report was published on 30 September 2026.
Shetland News reported that Claire White and Jonathon Bulter created the film. It was first shown at the UHI Scalloway auditorium in May, before its planned public online launch. These accounts describe White’s role differently: Promote Shetland calls her the producer, while Shetland News credits White and Bulter as creators.
Laurie Goodlad, curator of Scalloway Museum, said: “This film gives us a wonderful opportunity to share those stories more widely, and we hope it will be enjoyed by audiences far and wide.”

The documentary is available free on YouTube. Shetland News announced a release time of 7 p.m. on Friday 25 September 2026; Promote Shetland later confirmed that the film was available online. Look for Hearts Across the Sea on YouTube to watch it.
What was the Shetland Bus?
The Shetland Bus was a covert sea link between Shetland and German-occupied Norway during the Second World War. After Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, Norway’s royal family and government went into exile in London. Many Norwegians escaped west, often in fishing boats, with Shetland becoming a major landfall, according to Scalloway Museum’s account.

The route served both resistance operations and escape. Small Norwegian fishing boats carried agents, weapons, equipment, supplies and messages to Norway; on the return journeys, they brought refugees and others fleeing the occupation toward Shetland. The crossings were clandestine and dangerous, joining a small island community to resistance networks across the North Sea.
How did the Shetland Bus get people and supplies between Shetland and Norway?
From Lunna to Scalloway
The operation initially used Lunna as its base. It moved to Scalloway in 1942, and Scalloway remained the base for the rest of the war. Its harbour and community became closely associated with the boats and the people who took part.

Fishing boats, then submarine-chasers
Scalloway Museum says the fishing-boat strategy ended in early 1943, by which time 44 crewmen had died. The fishing boats were replaced by three American submarine-chasers. The museum reports that those vessels completed 116 clandestine missions without further loss of life.
For the operation through the end of the war in 1945, Scalloway Museum gives totals of 210 missions and more than 400 tons of weaponry, explosives and other supplies delivered. These are figures in the museum’s historical account.

Why do sources give different Shetland Bus death tolls?
The published local accounts do not give the casualty figure in the same terms. Promote Shetland says more than 30 men died on missions. Scalloway Museum specifies 44 crewmen lost by early 1943 and says the Scalloway memorial represents those 44. The figures should be attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as identical totals.

Scalloway’s waterfront memorial and the nearby museum exhibition offer a place to encounter the history beyond the film. Promote Shetland describes the exhibition as including original artefacts, photographs and personal accounts. Opening times can vary by season, so check with Scalloway Museum before planning a visit.

For a longer account, David Howarth’s The Shetland Bus, published by Lyons Press and distributed by Simon & Schuster, recounts the crossings, arms deliveries and rescue of refugees.
