Which tiara did Kate Middleton wear?
Catherine wore the Oriental Circlet, a historic tiara made for Queen Victoria. Vogue reported that this was Catherine’s first time wearing it. She paired it with a blue cape gown by Jenny Packham; Marie Claire described the gown as sequined, with a sheer cape.
The occasion was the state banquet held during the German President’s state visit. The Royal Household records that King Charles III and Queen Camilla welcomed President Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Büdenbender, who joined the Prince and Princess of Wales in a carriage procession to Windsor Castle before the banquet that evening. The Royal Household’s account of the visit confirms the date, setting and participants.
Was it her biggest tiara yet?
Vogue described the Oriental Circlet as “believed to be her biggest yet,” and Vanity Fair also called it her biggest to date. Those are media characterizations, not a verified measurement comparison: the cited coverage does not provide dimensions or a consistent size assessment across the tiaras Catherine has worn. Vogue’s report identifies the jewel and qualifies the size description.

What is the Oriental Circlet?
A Victorian design made for Queen Victoria
Jeweller Garrard says Prince Albert directed the creation of the Oriental Circlet for Queen Victoria in 1853. Its design incorporates lotus flowers and Mughal arches. The tiara was originally set with opals and 2,600 diamonds, according to Garrard’s history of the circlet.
Queen Alexandra later had the opals replaced with rubies. Garrard says she inherited the circlet in 1901 and sent it for alteration the following year. The Queen Mother received it in 1936 and wore it on several occasions; after her death in 2002, Elizabeth II inherited it and wore it once, during a 2005 visit to Malta.

A rare place in the Royal Collection
Garrard describes the Oriental Circlet as the only tiara Prince Albert designed for Queen Victoria that remains in the Royal Collection. Its history also reflects Albert’s involvement in Victoria’s jewellery: Garrard’s account quotes the Queen’s 1843 journal entry, “Albert has such taste and arranges everything for me about my jewels.”

The documented histories and occasions offer a more reliable comparison than claims about relative size. Catherine’s first public association with a tiara was at her 2011 wedding, when she wore the Cartier “halo” tiara, lent by The Queen. Cartier made it in 1936, and Princess Elizabeth received it from her mother for her 18th birthday. The Royal Family’s wedding record describes the piece and its provenance.

After the Oriental Circlet appearance, Catherine wore Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara at the Nigerian state banquet at Windsor Castle on 18 March 2026, according to British Vogue. Commissioned for Queen Mary in 1913, the tiara is also associated with Elizabeth II and Diana. These are distinct heirlooms with separate histories; the available accounts do not supply comparable measurements for ranking them by size.
