Prix fixe vs à la carte: Which Menu Offers Better Value for Your Meal?

Prix fixe bundles courses for one price; à la carte prices each dish separately. The better value depends on what you actually want to order and what the menu includes.

Neither prix fixe nor à la carte is automatically the better deal. Compare the prix fixe price with the prices of the dishes you would actually order separately, then check what the set menu includes and whether your preferred choices cost extra. Prix fixe can offer better value if you want most of its courses; à la carte can cost less if you want fewer dishes or different ones.

What’s the difference between prix fixe and à la carte?

With an à la carte menu, each dish is listed and priced separately, so you build a meal by choosing individual items. A restaurant may offer à la carte alongside another menu format.

A prix fixe menu bundles a meal or sequence of courses for one set price. The courses may be predetermined, or the restaurant may let you choose from a limited selection within each course. It does not necessarily mean a tasting menu, and the set price may not cover supplements or beverage pairings.

How to compare the menus at one restaurant

  1. Choose what you would really order. List the à la carte dishes you want and add their listed prices. Don’t compare the set menu with a hypothetical meal you wouldn’t choose.
  2. Check the prix fixe inclusions. Identify how many courses are included and whether the dishes you want are available within the set price. Note any supplements for particular choices.
  3. Keep optional extras separate. Add a beverage pairing or other add-on only if you plan to order it, and count it as included only when the menu explicitly says it is.
  4. Weigh choice and quantity, not just the headline price. A set menu bundles courses; à la carte lets you choose individual items and omit courses. If portion size matters, look for the restaurant’s description or ask—it cannot be reliably inferred from the menu format alone.
  5. Check the amount you will actually pay. Account for applicable charges and local price-display rules. Requirements differ by jurisdiction.

Which format is more likely to suit you?

Your priorities Format that may suit you better Why
You want most of the courses offered, and their à la carte equivalents would cost more together. Prix fixe The bundle may cost less than ordering those same dishes separately. Check supplements and what is actually included.
You want only one or two dishes, or would skip courses in the set menu. À la carte You can order fewer items instead of paying for a sequence you do not want.
You want particular dishes that are not included, or want more freedom to substitute. À la carte Item-level selection gives you more flexibility; set menus may limit choices.
You want a planned sequence and like the included choices. Prix fixe may be worth comparing A bundled meal can fit your preferences, but the fixed price alone does not establish that it is cheaper.

These are conditional comparisons, not a rule that one format costs less. There is no established standard savings percentage or typical price difference between prix fixe and à la carte. The useful comparison is the total for your desired meal at the restaurant you are considering.

What to check on the menu before you decide

  • Which courses and dishes are covered by the set price?
  • Are preferred dishes subject to a supplement?
  • Are drinks or pairings included, optional, or charged separately?
  • Can you substitute or omit a course?
  • Does the menu describe portions, or should you ask the restaurant?
  • What final charges apply where you are dining?

Price display rules depend on where you dine

In France, DGCCRF restaurant guidance says that displayed prices in establishments with service include taxes and service. French government price-information guidance also addresses clear price display and potential additional charges. These are France-specific requirements, not a worldwide rule; diners elsewhere should check the menu and local requirements.

For definitions, Toast’s guide to à la carte menus describes separately priced dishes, while OpenTable’s prix fixe guide describes set-price meals and menus with varying amounts of choice. Neither establishes that one format generally saves diners money.
