You can A/B test YouTube thumbnails in YouTube Studio using Test & compare: upload up to three thumbnail options, then let YouTube show them concurrently and compare their watch-time share. The tool is available on a computer for channels with advanced features enabled and eligible public long-form videos or podcast episodes. A test can take a few days or up to two weeks, and it may finish without a clear winner.
Before you start: check that your video is eligible
YouTube’s Test & compare feature is available in Studio on a computer, and your channel must have advanced features enabled. You can test public long-form videos and podcast episodes. A Premiere becomes eligible after it ends and converts to a long-form video.
- Not eligible: private videos, videos set as made for kids, videos for mature audiences, and Shorts.
- Shorts exception: if a video transitions to a Short, thumbnail tests previously created for it are no longer accessible.
If you cannot find the option, first check the video’s visibility and format, then confirm that advanced features are enabled for your channel.
Prepare thumbnail options that can teach you something
Make the variations meaningfully different
Test & compare is most informative when the options differ enough to be distinguishable. You might change the composition, background, text overlay, or placement of the main subject. YouTube recommends diverse variations; near-identical images can take longer for the system to distinguish.

For a documentary, for example, you could compare a close-up of the central person with a wider scene, or test a text-free image against one with a short, readable phrase. Keep the options relevant to the actual film: a thumbnail that attracts clicks but misrepresents the documentary risks drawing viewers whose expectations the video does not meet.
Use sufficiently large image files
YouTube recommends the highest resolution available for the experiment. If any test thumbnail is below 720p (1280 Ă— 720), YouTube says it downscales all thumbnails in the experiment to 480p (854 Ă— 480). For general custom-thumbnail guidance, YouTube recommends 3840 Ă— 2160 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and JPG or PNG files. The desktop upload limit listed in its guidance is 50 MB for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails; limits can vary by device.

Thumbnails must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Violating content can be rejected and may result in strikes or loss of thumbnail privileges.
Run the test in YouTube Studio
- Open the video in Studio. For a new video, use Create to upload it. For an existing video, select it from Content.
- Open the thumbnail controls. Under Thumbnail, choose Test & compare.
- Add your options. Upload up to three thumbnail images, then select Done.
- Publish or let the existing video run. For a new upload, the test starts when the video is published. You can stop an active test and manually select a thumbnail if needed.
Do not change the video’s title or thumbnail while the test is running: YouTube’s instructions say either change stops the test, and you must restart it. When results are ready, review them in Studio; YouTube also directs creators to the video’s Reach analytics area for experiment reporting.

How Test & Compare decides the result
YouTube shows the options during the same period rather than testing them one after another. Its comparison is based on watch-time share, not simply which thumbnail earns the most clicks. YouTube’s rationale is that a useful thumbnail should set accurate expectations and help viewers choose a video they will actually watch. A small share of traffic may be held out as a control group; those viewers see the default thumbnail, and their performance is excluded from the experiment calculation.
This is different from the general impressions report in YouTube Analytics. There, YouTube counts a thumbnail impression when it has been visible for more than one second and at least 50% of the thumbnail is on screen. Impressions from external websites and apps, YouTube mobile web, notifications, and other listed surfaces are excluded from that metric. That report can help you understand registered impressions, views, and watch time, but it does not replace Test & Compare’s watch-time-share result.

Read the result labels without overclaiming

A test may take a few days or up to two weeks. YouTube identifies impression volume, how recently the video was published, and how different the options are as factors in timing. A lack of a Winner is normal: it is not proof the options are identical, and a Preferred result is not certainty. Audience composition can change, and repeated tests can vary through ordinary statistical variation.

- Start with older videos if you want to limit disruption. YouTube says testing older videos can reduce the impact of a test on the channel’s overall views.
- Apply the result to the tested video, not every upload. The experiment is evidence about that video and the viewers who saw its options during that test, not a universal rule about thumbnail design.
- Optimize for the video’s promise, not a click alone. A higher click-through rate is not, by itself, the tool’s winning criterion; watch-time share is.
- Do not promise a performance lift. YouTube’s official guidance does not establish a general increase in views, click-through rate, or watch time from using Test & Compare.
