There is no universal winner: compare the exact VPS or Cloud Server plan and region, then match its traffic allowance and network capacity to your stream. OVHcloud’s VPS page advertises unlimited traffic, with public bandwidth varying by plan. Hetzner Cloud publishes included traffic by product family and location and bills outbound overage. A continuously sent feed can use several terabytes each month, so bitrate and whether you are merely playing pre-encoded files or transcoding them should guide the choice.
First, decide whether a VPS is the right way to keep the stream live
A VPS can run a media player or encoder that sends a pre-recorded playlist to YouTube around the clock. It gives you control over the software and configuration, but you are responsible for server administration, process recovery, monitoring and security. OVHcloud says basic server-administration knowledge is required; Hetzner Cloud servers are self-managed, with administration and security the customer’s responsibility.

Actual usage depends on bitrate variation and protocol overhead. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For a 6 Mbps feed, that means planning for at least 7.2 Mbps of upload capacity for the primary feed, before any backup stream or other concurrent traffic. Compare the estimate with the selected product’s current allowance and terms, then monitor actual transfer. Hetzner says outbound overage is charged in 100 MB blocks; usage notifications do not cap traffic. Hetzner traffic billing FAQ.
Choose based on the workload and exact region
OVHcloud is a fit when its plan terms suit your traffic
OVHcloud is worth considering if the exact VPS tier’s advertised unlimited-traffic terms and public-bandwidth allocation match your needs. Confirm the current plan details for the region you will use; “unlimited traffic” does not by itself establish that a particular encoder path will stay stable.

Hetzner is a fit when the region’s allowance and overage work for you
Check the selected Cloud Server family and location before assuming how much traffic is included. The documented 20 TB allowance applies to EU CX, CPX and CAX Cloud Servers; US and Singapore terms vary. If real-time transcoding needs more predictable CPU availability, consider whether a dedicated-resource class is appropriate, but verify performance for your own media and settings rather than assuming a plan can handle a particular resolution.
Use an apples-to-apples cart comparison
Compare the same region, a suitably sized server, any required public IP, traffic terms and the administrative effort involved. The available figures do not establish a universal cheapest choice or comparable sustained throughput for these products.

Configure the YouTube side before relying on the stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. The stream and content must follow YouTube policies. YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- Create the live stream and protect its stream key. In YouTube Studio, set up the stream and use its stream key in your encoder or playlist software. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the server configuration.
- Use a supported delivery protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live encoder delivery. Use the server URL and key shown for your stream. YouTube encoder settings and streaming guidance.
- Set output to match the files and available upload capacity. YouTube publishes encoder guidance by resolution and frame rate. Avoid choosing a bitrate that exceeds the server’s tested path to YouTube; leave the recommended 20% upload headroom. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into viewer formats, so the outgoing feed bitrate is the relevant starting point for estimating server egress.
- Test the complete route. Start a private or unlisted test, verify audio and video, and watch for dropped frames or ingest interruptions before scheduling a long public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing because a network disruption can break a stream. YouTube streaming tips.
- Make the server recoverable. Configure the player or encoder to restart after a crash, arrange monitoring and alerts, and confirm that it reconnects to YouTube after an interruption. A provider availability commitment does not handle those application-level tasks for you.
For a standard SDR playlist, follow YouTube’s normal encoder guidance. Do not apply its separate HDR requirements by default: YouTube’s HDR live guidance specifies HLS output with HEVC and strict segment rules, a different workflow. YouTube HDR live-streaming guidance.
Common failure points and practical fixes
- The stream stops after a server or software restart: configure the media process to start automatically and test recovery after a reboot.
- YouTube reports dropped frames or the feed disconnects: check actual upload capacity and competing traffic, reduce the feed bitrate if necessary, preserve headroom and test the route to YouTube again.
- The bill or usage alert is higher than expected: compare metered egress with the bitrate estimate, account for protocol overhead and confirm the exact product’s allowance and overage terms. On Hetzner, notifications are not a traffic cap.
- Playback works but real-time encoding overloads the server: distinguish simple playback of pre-encoded files from transcoding. Measure CPU under the intended workload and select a suitable resource class or avoid on-the-fly conversion.
- YouTube rejects the stream or limits the channel: check channel eligibility and policy status, confirm the stream key and encoder settings, and review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- A continuous stream raises copyright or reused-content concerns: make sure you have the necessary rights to every video and audio track, and review YouTube’s policies. A technically valid stream is not permission to rebroadcast someone else’s work.
