There is no universal cheaper option. A home NAS’s incremental cost depends on its measured power draw, your electricity tariff and any extra internet-plan charge. A cloud VM has a posted compute price, but a continuous stream can use more outbound transfer than the plan includes, and the VM still has to be capable of the encoding workload. Compare both using your own measurements and the stream settings you intend to use.
What the comparison includes
For a fair monthly comparison, count the costs that change because you run the stream, then separately show any costs you already pay but want to allocate to it.
| Cost or constraint | Home NAS | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Compute and equipment | Incremental NAS electricity; include new hardware only if you actually need it. | VM plan price, plus any storage, backup or other add-ons. |
| Network | Stable upload capacity and any incremental ISP charge for speed or data use. | Included outbound transfer and any billed overage. |
| Operational responsibility | Home power, internet, router and equipment availability. | For a DigitalOcean Droplet, you manage the operating system, applications and data. |
| Fit for the stream | Confirm that the NAS can sustain the required workload. | Confirm that the selected VM can sustain the required workload. |
The available pricing and encoder guidance do not establish a tested NAS or VM configuration for a particular stream. Treat the compute-fit check as something to validate, not an assumed capability.
Estimate the home NAS cost
Measure the draw you are paying for
Use a plug-in electricity meter if you do not know the NAS’s average draw. Measure under the conditions in which it will stream, including any drives and other equipment whose power use is part of your calculation. If the NAS is already running for other purposes, distinguish its baseline consumption from the additional draw attributable to streaming.

Calculate electricity and add any ISP charge
Use this formula for the billing period:
Electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the billing period × your local cost per kWh.
For example, enter your measured average watts, the period’s actual hours and your own tariff. This produces a reader-specific estimate, not a typical NAS cost. Add only an ISP-plan charge that running the stream actually incurs, such as a required upgrade or applicable data charge. If your equipment and connection are already paid for, show both the incremental cost and the fully allocated cost rather than treating sunk costs as either free or newly incurred.

Estimate how much transfer the stream uses
A rough estimate for a constant encoded bitrate is:
Decimal GB per month ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds in the month ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000.

- DIY Surveillance System - Transform IP cameras into a professional monitoring solution with motion alerts, recording schedules and remote viewing
- 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
Using a 30-day illustrative month (2,592,000 seconds), the arithmetic gives about 3,240 decimal GB at 10 Mbps, 4,536 GB at 14 Mbps, or 1,944 GB at 6 Mbps. These are estimates derived from the stated bitrate and period, not published YouTube traffic measurements. Actual transfer can differ with stream configuration and interruptions or restarts. Providers use their own units and accounting rules, so convert the estimate to the provider’s billing units before comparing it with an allowance.
YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30, 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60. Thus, a stream running continuously at those example bitrates would exceed each of the listed DigitalOcean transfer allowances before considering unit conversion. That does not by itself determine the overage bill: DigitalOcean pools transfer at the team level, unused monthly allowance does not roll over, and extra Droplet outbound transfer is listed at $0.01/GiB. Check what other Droplets in the team consume and use the provider’s accounting rules for a bill estimate. DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation was last verified 2026-09-14.

Choose the stream settings before comparing capacity
The stream’s bitrate drives both the upload requirement at home and the cloud VM’s outbound transfer use. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 or AV1, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its H.264 bitrate table includes the resolution and frame-rate examples below; use the applicable current guidance for other combinations.
| H.264 stream example | YouTube’s listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (accessed 2026-10-04). YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats; the encoder’s outbound ingestion bitrate is not the same as viewer-side delivery bandwidth.
RTMPS transport requirements do not depend on whether the encoder runs on a NAS or VM. Google’s documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP through an SSL connection and specifies port 443, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and hostname/SNI handling. Check whether your connection or VM can sustain the stream
For a home NAS
- Measure sustained upload capacity at the location and times the stream will run; do not compare only against a plan’s advertised download speed.
- Check the ISP’s data-use terms and whether the stream changes your plan cost.
- Verify the NAS can continuously read the source and encode at the chosen format and bitrate; no performance result for a particular NAS is established here.
- Account for home-side dependencies: power, router, internet service and equipment upkeep.
For a cloud VM
- Check the selected plan’s outbound allowance and billing units against your transfer estimate.
- Account for team-level pooling, other Droplets’ use and non-rollover of unused transfer allowance.
- Validate the VM’s ability to encode your source format continuously; the listed plan prices and specifications are not workload benchmarks.
- Include the administration time and responsibility for the VM’s operating system, streaming software and data.
Before relying on either setup, YouTube advises testing before the live stream with audio and movement similar to the real content, then monitoring stream health and messages while it runs. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives the relevant settings and testing advice.
Make the decision with your own inputs
- Set the intended stream format and bitrate. Use YouTube’s settings guidance for your resolution, frame rate and codec.
- Estimate the network load. For the NAS, check sustained home upload and ISP terms. For a VM, calculate monthly transfer and compare it with the plan allowance using the provider’s units.
- Measure NAS electricity. Use average watts and your local tariff; separate incremental streaming draw from the NAS’s existing baseline.
- Build the VM total. Add the recurring compute price, any applicable transfer overage and relevant add-ons.
- Validate sustained compute and reliability. Test the actual source and settings, monitor YouTube stream health, and include the operational responsibilities of each host in your decision.
A NAS may look cheaper when its equipment and connection are already paid for, but the incremental and fully allocated totals answer different questions. A VM’s posted compute price is not its complete cost if transfer or add-ons apply. Without your measurements and a verified workload fit, neither option can be called universally cheaper.
