To caption an always-on YouTube story stream, send captions to YouTube either embedded in the outgoing video as EIA-608/CEA-708 or through a separate caption feed over HTTP. YouTube’s automatic live captions are another option for eligible English-language streams, but they require normal latency and should not be treated as a guaranteed or fully accurate transcript. Plan captions for the replay separately: live automatic captions do not carry over to the video on demand (VOD).

Choose a live-caption method

YouTube’s core requirement is that captions reach YouTube during the broadcast. Choose the workflow that fits your encoder, caption provider, language, and need for editorial control.

Method How captions reach YouTube Best fit and limitations
Automatic live captions YouTube generates captions from the stream’s audio. Simple to enable for eligible English-language streams, but availability is limited by eligibility and rollout. Recognition can be wrong, and the option requires normal latency.
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions The encoder includes captions in the video stream. Useful when your encoder and caption workflow can produce embedded captions. YouTube currently supports one caption track for this workflow.
Separate HTTP caption feed Captioning software sends captions to YouTube’s signed Captions Ingestion URL using HTTP POST. Separates captions from the video encoder, but requires a captioning connection and one feed for each stream entry point.

YouTube’s instructions describe both delivery methods and the automatic option: live caption requirements and automatic captioning.

Set up YouTube automatic live captions

Use this path only if the stream is in English, the channel has access to the feature, and normal latency is acceptable. The setting is per stream, so check it again when setting up a new broadcast.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and set up the live stream.
  2. Turn on closed captions, choose Automatic captions, and select the video language.
  3. Start the broadcast and check the captions in the live player. Listen for unclear, overlapping, or multilingual audio that could make recognition less reliable.
  4. Monitor the captions during the stream. If they are missing or materially inaccurate, use a prepared embedded or HTTP caption workflow where dependable coverage matters.

YouTube says live automatic captions are available in English only. The feature may not appear for every channel, and audio quality, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages can affect results. YouTube also warns that automatic speech recognition may misrepresent speech and encourages creators to review automatically generated captions. Treat this option as a monitored fallback, not a guarantee of accurate transcription.

Send captions through your encoder or caption software

Option A: Embed EIA-608/CEA-708 captions

  1. In the stream setup, enable closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
  2. Configure your encoder and caption source to include EIA-608 or CEA-708 captions in the outgoing video stream.
  3. Confirm that captions appear in the live player and that the caption source stays connected for the duration of the broadcast.

YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow, even though the caption standards can support more.

Option B: Send a separate HTTP caption feed

  1. In the stream setup, turn on closed captions and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
  2. Configure your captioning software or provider to send captions to that URL using HTTP POST.
  3. Check that the caption feed is connected and captions appear in the live player.
  4. Keep the system clock accurate. YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for its documented captioned-event workflow.

YouTube names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software examples. Confirm current versions and vendor support before choosing a tool. Each stream entry point can have one caption feed. See YouTube’s live caption requirements for its current setup instructions.

Choose a latency setting that supports captions

For an always-on story stream without live audience interaction, normal latency is generally the practical choice when captions are needed. YouTube’s automatic live captions require normal latency, and its Live Streaming API states that ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Lower latency reduces the read-ahead buffer and can increase the likelihood of buffering, so choose it only when the interaction benefit justifies the trade-off.

Check YouTube’s explanations of live streaming latency and the Live Streaming API for the relevant settings and limitations.

Caption the replay separately

Do not assume that captions visible during a live stream will be available or identical on its replay. Live automatic captions are not retained after the broadcast; YouTube generates a separate set of automatic captions for the VOD, and they may differ from the live version.

Test the always-on setup and its failure points

Before launch, test with representative speech and audio, confirm captions in the live player, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during a broadcast; its encoder settings guidance covers live setup. For a continuous channel, also check captions after reconnects, scheduled stream rotations, content changes, and caption-provider handoffs.

YouTube’s reviewed instructions do not promise that a separate caption feed resumes seamlessly after a restart, encoder reconnect, loop transition, or stream-entry-point change. Test those cases with the actual setup, and confirm feed behavior with the caption provider before relying on uninterrupted coverage.

  • Automatic-caption option is missing: Check channel eligibility and rollout availability, confirm the stream is set to normal latency, and verify that English is selected.
  • Captions are inaccurate or absent: Check audio clarity and overlapping speech. Confirm that the encoder is embedding captions or that the HTTP captioning software is connected to the correct signed ingestion URL.
  • Captions stop after a restart or handoff: Recheck the caption feed and live player after each change. Feed continuity is not guaranteed by YouTube’s instructions.
  • The replay has no usable captions: Inspect the VOD separately and upload, auto-sync, or manually enter corrected captions in YouTube Studio.

Or let it run in the cloud
