The Acolyte is an eight-episode Star Wars mystery about a former Padawan and a Jedi Master investigating crimes in the final years of the High Republic. It is worth considering if you want a Jedi-centered story outside the familiar Skywalker era; its first season is complete, and the series will not return for a second season.
What is The Acolyte about without spoilers?
Created by Leslye Headland, The Acolyte takes place about 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Former Padawan Osha, now a mechanic, finds herself needing to clear her name. She reunites with Jedi Master Sol as they investigate a series of crimes. That premise frames the series as a mystery as well as a science-fiction adventure, without centering on the familiar Skywalker-era characters.
The High Republic is the era in which the story is set, not homework required to follow the setup. The official series page identifies the show with that period; its central case and characters are introduced within the series. Who is in the cast?
Amandla Stenberg plays Mae and Osha, and Lee Jung-jae plays Jedi Master Sol. Manny Jacinto is credited as the Stranger. The wider cast includes Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Lucasfilm credits Leslye Headland, Kogonada, Alex Garcia Lopez, and Hanelle Culpepper with directing the eight episodes.

Those credits establish the ensemble and production team; they do not, by themselves, tell you how the performances or direction land. This spoiler-free overview does not claim a firsthand critical judgment about the show’s pacing, action, or quality.
How long is it, and is the story finished?
The first season has eight episodes and is rated TV-14. The first two episodes premiered on June 4, 2024, and the run concluded on July 16, 2024. The official StarWars.com listing gives the rating and episode guide; ABC News reported the run dates and cancellation.

The series was not renewed for a second season. ABC News reported that status on August 20, 2024, after TVLine reported the cancellation on August 19, 2024. Viewers should approach the available eight episodes as the complete released season, not as the start of a confirmed continuation. Neither report establishes how satisfying the season’s ending will feel to an individual viewer.
What do the audience and critic scores say?
Rotten Tomatoes displays a 79% Tomatometer from 120 reviews and a 19% Popcornmeter from more than 25,000 ratings, as accessed in 2026. These are changing, publisher-specific aggregates, not objective measurements of quality. The gap signals a sharp difference between the two score groups on that service, but cannot explain why individual viewers liked or disliked the series.

For comparison, ABC News reported Rotten Tomatoes figures of 78% for critics and 18% for audiences on August 20, 2024. Those are historical values, not the current display.
