Mikey Day played Jesus; James Austin Johnson played Trump. The scene was satire, not a factual account of tariff policy.
What happens in the Easter sketch?
The cold open begins with Day as Jesus reenacting the cleansing of the temple. Johnson’s Trump then interrupts the biblical scene and turns its religious imagery toward the economy. The joke draws on Easter and Messiah references to lampoon tariff decisions, price worries and market volatility.
Johnson’s character says, “Many people are even calling me the Messiah because of the mess I-a made out of the economy.” The line belongs to the SNL performance; it is not a statement by the real Trump. The Guardian’s April 13, 2025 review reported the line.
What was the tariff context in April 2025?
Contemporary coverage placed the sketch amid tariff-related market turbulence and concern about prices. The Atlantic’s April 13, 2025 analysis noted egg-cost jokes and an Easter-themed comparison involving markets rising and falling.

Tariffs also appeared in other parts of the episode, but in different formats: Weekend Update addressed the administration’s then-reported 90-day pause on most tariffs affecting countries other than China, alongside China tariffs, while the pretaped “The White Potus” was another tariff-related segment. These are descriptions of the April 2025 news moment, not a statement of current policy or a legal account of the measures. The Guardian’s episode review covered the Weekend Update references.
