A YouTube stream is not necessarily stopped automatically at 12 hours. YouTube’s documented 12-hour caveats concern whether a long stream is archived and whether viewers can rewind—not a universal cutoff for the live broadcast. If your MediaMTX-forwarded stream ended, check the stream’s status and error in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare the time against MediaMTX’s logs and configuration before setting up an automatic restart.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually means
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Those are archive and viewer-rewind limitations; neither cited YouTube Help page says every livestream is automatically terminated at 12 hours. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.
So first establish what happened to your broadcast. An archive missing after a long stream does not, by itself, show that the live connection was stopped by a 12-hour timer. A stream-health error or a matching MediaMTX log entry is more useful for diagnosing an actual disconnection.
Diagnose the disconnection before configuring a restart
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Find the event and note whether it is still live, ended, or reporting a stream-health error. Record the message and the time it appeared. YouTube surfaces stream health and error details in Live Control Room; its encoder setup guidance describes creating or selecting a stream, entering the server URL and stream key in an encoder, and finding live and past streams in YouTube Studio’s Live tab.
- Compare the timestamp with MediaMTX logs. Review the logs and active configuration around the reported time. Confirm the intended path was being forwarded and check for connection or publishing errors.
- Verify the destination and key. Make sure the RTMPS destination and stream key in the MediaMTX configuration match the current values shown for your stream in YouTube Studio. MediaMTX documents forwarding to YouTube with an RTMPS destination and stream key; its example is not a substitute for checking YouTube’s current stream URL. Keep the key private: do not expose it in screenshots, logs shared publicly, or example configuration.
- Confirm there is audio as well as video. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Check that both tracks are present in the source being forwarded.
- Check what was saved after the broadcast. Look in YouTube Studio’s Live tab and review the stream’s metrics. YouTube cautions that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so keep a local recording if preserving the full programme matters.
MediaMTX is a self-hosted live media server and proxy. It can publish, read, forward, record, and play back streams, convert between protocols, expose an API and metrics, and run external command hooks. It supports RTMP publishing and documents workflows using tools such as FFmpeg and OBS Studio. The exact cause of an individual failure depends on the MediaMTX version, configuration, logs, YouTube event and key setup, and hosting or network conditions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the restart behavior that fits your event
Before automating anything, decide whether a restart should resume the same scheduled event or begin a new one. The right choice depends on how your YouTube stream key and event are set up. A reconnect can affect viewer continuity and how the broadcast is segmented or archived; do not assume that restarting preserves the same event or guarantees an archive.
- Manual monitoring and restart: useful when you want to inspect the error and choose deliberately whether to reconnect to the current event or start another. It requires someone to monitor the stream.
- Automated recovery: useful when an operator has designed and tested the reconnect behavior for the specific deployment and event workflow. Test whether it reconnects as intended and what viewers see.
- Local recording: use a separate local recording when a complete copy matters, rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive for a stream that may exceed 12 hours.
MediaMTX path hooks can run commands on stream lifecycle events, such as a path becoming available or going online or offline. Some hooks have restart settings if the command exits. That gives an operator building blocks for automation, not a universally valid YouTube session-rotation recipe: a hook alone does not prove that a YouTube session has been rotated or that a reconnect will preserve a particular event setup. MediaMTX documents its options in the configuration reference and hooks guide. Design and verify the behavior for your own workflow rather than scheduling a restart solely because the clock reaches 12 hours.
