Use RTMP/RTMPS for the stream that reaches YouTube. SRS documents ingesting a prerecorded file with FFmpeg and publishing it to SRS over RTMP; YouTube recommends RTMPS for its live ingest. SRS WebRTC is useful for a separate real-time publishing or playback leg, but the documentation reviewed does not establish it as a direct YouTube ingest protocol.
The distinction matters: a prerecorded channel may involve a file-to-SRS leg, an optional browser or other real-time leg, and a YouTube-facing ingest leg. Choose the transport for each leg rather than treating WebRTC and RTMP as interchangeable ways to send a file straight to YouTube.
What each protocol does in this workflow
| Question | RTMP/RTMPS | WebRTC in SRS |
|---|---|---|
| Documented role | SRS documents RTMP publishing to platforms such as YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its ingest. | SRS documents WebRTC publishing and playback, including RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion. The sources reviewed do not establish direct WebRTC ingest by YouTube. |
| Best fit here | The publishing path into YouTube, using the current endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. | A real-time SRS leg, such as browser publishing or playback, when that leg is needed. |
| Setup to check | Endpoint, path and key; RTMPS support; port 443; and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. | Reachable candidate address and UDP network mapping in the documented example; HTTPS for browser publishing from outside localhost. |
| Decision prompt | Does this leg carry the stream into YouTube? | Does this leg need SRS’s real-time WebRTC publishing or playback? |
This is a comparison of documented roles, not a latency benchmark. No measured end-to-end latency for this architecture is established by these sources.
How to send a prerecorded video through SRS to YouTube
- Choose an SRS version and use matching documentation. The SRS v6 ingest page is marked stable; the retrieved v7 RTMP page is marked unstable, and the v5 RTMP page is archived. Examples can differ between releases. See SRS v6 ingest documentation, SRS v7 RTMP documentation, and SRS v5 RTMP documentation.
- Set up file ingest. SRS v6 documents using FFmpeg or another tool to ingest files such as MP4 or FLV and publish them to SRS as RTMP; converting a VOD file to a live stream is an explicit use case. Follow the SRS ingest instructions for your version. The documented pattern alone does not specify a tested command or production-ready looping schedule, so verify the FFmpeg invocation and repeat behavior in your own setup.
- Configure the YouTube-facing publishing path. Use the current server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when supported, and check the transport, server and path, and port requirements in YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide. Treat the key as a secret: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or source control.
- Check encoding settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. It lists supported live codecs and audio options; check the current page for the settings that match your chosen resolution and encoder. Recommendations are not a guarantee that every SRS build or FFmpeg binary supports every codec and transport combination.
- Add WebRTC only for a defined SRS real-time requirement. If you need an SRS WebRTC publish or playback leg, follow the matching-version SRS WebRTC documentation. Check the candidate address, UDP reachability and, for browser publishing from a non-local page, HTTPS. That additional leg does not replace the documented RTMPS path into YouTube.
- Test each leg separately. Confirm the file reaches SRS, then verify the YouTube-facing RTMPS connection and YouTube’s stream preview/status. If WebRTC is part of the design, test its browser or client path independently. This separation helps locate whether a fault is in file ingest, the SRS real-time path, or YouTube publishing.
Settings and operational checks that affect the result
YouTube encoder values
- Use constant bitrate, as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder permits it; do not exceed four seconds, according to YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Match codec, frame rate, resolution, and audio configuration to YouTube’s current recommendations and the capabilities of the encoder actually in use.
- YouTube’s guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, with recommended audio bitrates of 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Check the live guidance before configuring because platform recommendations may change.
Stream key and endpoint handling
- Copy the current server URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an old saved endpoint.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the publishing configuration.
- For RTMPS, verify that the selected endpoint and network path support the secure transport and the documented port 443 requirements.
Version and protocol boundaries
Use documentation for the deployed SRS release. The cited WebRTC page is SRS v4 documentation, the ingest page is v6, and the RTMP page is v7 marked unstable; do not assume examples or configuration are identical across these versions. YouTube’s ingest URLs and encoder guidance are also subject to change.

When HLS is relevant instead
HLS is a separate YouTube ingest option for some HDR or codec cases that RTMP does not support. YouTube notes that HLS can have higher latency because video is delivered in segments. It is useful when the codec or HDR requirement calls for it, but it does not change the central SRS distinction: WebRTC is a real-time SRS path, while the documented YouTube-facing choice here is RTMPS. See YouTube’s HLS live streaming guide.
Troubleshooting by symptom
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Recheck the server URL, path, stream key, and selected transport against the current Live Control Room values.
- Confirm RTMPS is selected where supported and that outbound network access meets the endpoint’s port requirements.
- Verify that SRS or the publishing tool is actually sending to the YouTube-facing endpoint; a successful file ingest into SRS is not proof that YouTube received it.
The stream connects but YouTube reports encoding problems
- Compare the encoder’s codec, constant bitrate setting, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio setup with YouTube’s current encoder page.
- Keep the keyframe interval at the recommended two seconds and no longer than four seconds.
- Check the exact codec and transport combination supported by the SRS release and FFmpeg binary in use; platform recommendations do not ensure local support.
WebRTC fails outside the local network
- Check that the candidate IP address is reachable by the client and that the required UDP mapping is in place.
- If publishing from a browser on a non-local page, serve the page over HTTPS as described by SRS.
- Test WebRTC independently from YouTube ingest; resolving a WebRTC connectivity problem will not configure the separate RTMPS publishing leg.
The file plays once instead of continuing
SRS’s ingest documentation establishes the VOD-to-live pattern, but does not establish a production-ready looping schedule. Inspect the FFmpeg process and its repeat behavior, then validate the result at SRS before troubleshooting YouTube.
