Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a command-line, headless relay, FFmpeg is the clearest open-source starting point. OBS Studio is a better fit when you want a graphical encoder and scene workflow, while Stream247 describes a dashboard built specifically for headless relaying. None is established as the universally most reliable choice: the available documentation describes features, not controlled reliability or performance comparisons.
Choose by workflow, not by an unverified reliability claim
These options solve different versions of the problem. A 24/7 prerecorded stream still needs a host that stays online, a connection that can send the feed, and a way to notice and recover from failures.
| Option | What it does | Best fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube from a dashboard. | Readers who want an always-on YouTube stream without leaving a computer running. One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the first day is free. | It is a hosted service, not open-source software, and streams to YouTube only. |
| FFmpeg | A command-line media tool that can loop local video and audio files and send an RTMP stream. A community example uses an Ubuntu VPS and systemd restart behavior. | People comfortable configuring a scripted, headless setup. | You manage the command, files, host, monitoring, and recovery. The example does not establish minimum server specifications or a universally reliable configuration. |
| OBS Studio | Open-source encoding software with a graphical interface and scene workflow. The OBS Project describes it as free for commercial use under GPLv2. | Operators who want to configure a stream visually or combine it with scenes. | You need an available graphical workflow and must account for encoding load and connection stability. |
| Stream247 | Its repository describes a headless relay with a web dashboard, playlist controls, video or playlist looping, direct HLS URL input, and RTMP/RTMPS destinations including YouTube Live. | Readers who want a purpose-built dashboard around a headless relay. | Check project maintenance, input-source requirements, and whether its controls suit your workflow. Repository claims are not independent performance tests. |
For a DIY setup, choose FFmpeg for scripted control, OBS for a graphical workflow, or investigate Stream247 if its dashboard and documented inputs match your needs. No cited source provides a controlled benchmark, uptime measurement, or verified universal winner.
What you need before going live
- A media source: Prepare the prerecorded video or playlist you intend to repeat. A community FFmpeg example uses local video and audio files; Stream247’s repository describes playlist, video, and direct HLS URL inputs.
- An always-available host: A VPS or other machine must remain online for a continuous stream. The cited FFmpeg example uses an Ubuntu VPS, but does not prove that any particular CPU, memory, GPU, or bandwidth level is sufficient.
- Capacity for your chosen output: If your setup transcodes, resource needs depend on the media and output settings. The available example does not quantify encoding capacity, bandwidth, or hosting costs.
- YouTube Live access and credentials: In Live Control Room, create or select a stream and provide the encoder with the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not put it in a public repository.
- Monitoring and recovery: A process restart rule helps with some failures, but does not replace checking the host, network, encoder, and YouTube stream state.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you plan to use. Follow YouTube’s official encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for that stream into the encoder’s connection settings. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to the stream.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview and live status to show that the incoming feed is being received. Check the preview before treating the stream as live to viewers.
- Monitor stream health and configuration warnings. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes health states and configuration issues, including possible codec, bitrate, and sample-rate problems.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.

Configure a relay that can keep running
FFmpeg: a headless, scripted route
FFmpeg is the most direct fit when you want a command-line process to read local media and send it to YouTube. A community deployment example uses an Ubuntu VPS, local video and audio files, RTMP output, and systemd restart behavior. Treat it as an implementation example, not a verified recipe for every machine or media file.
- Prepare the video and any audio files on the host. Confirm that the paths used in your command or playlist match the actual files and that the intended media can be read.
- Configure FFmpeg to loop the media and send its output to the YouTube stream URL with the stream key. The exact command and encoding settings depend on your inputs and whether you are copying or transcoding; the cited example does not establish universal settings or resource requirements.
- Run the process and verify that YouTube receives a usable preview. If you use systemd to restart a failed process, confirm that the service starts successfully after a deliberate restart and that logs expose errors you can act on.
- Monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s stream health. A process can be running while the network feed or media configuration is still faulty.
Never commit a stream key to a public code repository. Store it in a protected configuration mechanism appropriate to your host and restrict access to it.

OBS Studio: a graphical encoder route
OBS Studio is open-source software developed by volunteer contributors, and the OBS Project states that it is free for commercial use under GPLv2. Its graphical workflow can suit operators who want to manage scenes and streaming settings visually. For unattended 24/7 use, the computer running OBS still has to stay on, and you need to watch for encoding or connection problems.
- In OBS, open Settings and the Stream section; select YouTube or the applicable service connection method, then enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Choose the scene and media source containing the prerecorded video. Check that the source is configured to repeat if you need it to loop; verify the behavior in the OBS preview.
- Set output and video options to values suitable for the source and your available upload capacity. OBS’s official dropped frames and connection troubleshooting page explains that bitrate-related dropped frames can indicate connection problems.
- Start streaming, then check both the OBS status and YouTube’s preview and health information. Keep the host available and arrange a way to detect interruptions.

RTMP or HLS: choose the ingestion method deliberately
RTMP is the common route represented in the FFmpeg example. YouTube also documents RTMPS and HLS ingestion. Do not apply HLS-specific segment rules to a typical RTMP setup.
If you choose HLS, YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance specifies HTTPS POST/PUT requests, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Use an HLS-capable workflow only if you can meet those requirements.

Copyright, live access, and what a loop does not solve
Sending prerecorded video continuously does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check that any permission covers live retransmission. YouTube’s live setup and stream-health checks concern delivery and configuration; they do not establish that you have the rights to the media or that a channel will qualify for monetization.
A playlist or loop can keep a feed populated, but it does not make repeated material original or resolve channel-level policy questions. Review YouTube’s current rules for live streaming, copyright, and reused content before building a channel around repeated recordings.

Common problems and practical checks
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Stream URL or key, encoder connection, host network | Verify that the encoder has the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, then check its logs and YouTube preview. |
| Preview appears, but YouTube reports a configuration issue | Codec, bitrate, sample rate, or other stream configuration | Read the specific health warning and adjust the encoder configuration to address that issue; the API documentation describes health states and configuration issue reporting. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Connection stability or bitrate relative to available upload capacity | Use the OBS troubleshooting guidance, check the connection, and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain. |
| The stream stops after an encoder or host failure | Process supervision, host availability, network interruption | Check service logs and host status. A restart policy such as the one in the community systemd example can restart a failed process, but you still need monitoring to confirm that YouTube receives the resumed feed. |
| Video or audio fails partway through a playlist | Input path, unreadable file, or incompatible media in the sequence | Check the failing file and encoder logs; test the media sequence before leaving it unattended. The available example does not specify a universal normalization procedure. |
