Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your Nginx RTMP relay reaches YouTube but viewers hear nothing, trace the audio track through the whole path: source → encoder → Nginx/FFmpeg → YouTube ingest → playback. The first hop where audio disappears is where to fix it; Nginx cannot forward audio that never reaches it. Check each stage in order, then test privately and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
1. Check whether the source has audio
Start before Nginx. Play the source locally and confirm that the sound you expect is actually present. If an application, capture device, or operating-system input supplies the audio, verify that it is selected, unmuted, assigned to the correct channel, and permitted to capture sound.
- If the source itself is silent, correct the application or device selection, mute state, channel assignment, or permissions.
- If the source sounds right, move on to the encoder. Do not change Nginx or buy capture hardware until you know the source is the failure point.
2. Verify the encoder output
Check the encoder’s output or status display, or monitor a local copy of the encoded stream. Confirm that an audio track exists and that its level moves while sound is playing. If the encoder has no audio input or emits no audio track, fix its capture or output settings first. If audio is present, continue downstream.
Local RTMP playback as a checkpoint
If you can play the local RTMP stream, listen there. Sound at the local playback point shows that the source and at least part of the encoder-to-Nginx path are working; silence there narrows the search to the earlier stages. A local result does not by itself prove that the stream YouTube receives has audio.

3. Inspect Nginx RTMP and any FFmpeg relay
Review the active Nginx RTMP application block and any exec, exec_push, or related FFmpeg command. The nginx-rtmp documentation includes FFmpeg examples that explicitly encode audio and video, so check what your actual command does rather than assuming a relay preserves audio. nginx-rtmp module directives documentation
- Confirm the FFmpeg input points to the intended local RTMP stream.
- Check that the command does not disable audio with
-an. - When mapping streams explicitly, make sure the intended audio stream is mapped to the output.
- Confirm that the output has an audio codec enabled and inspect FFmpeg logs for stream-mapping or encoder errors.
- If the relay copies audio without re-encoding, verify that the incoming audio codec and container are compatible with the next hop. Otherwise, configure audio encoding.
- If you request an encoder such as AAC, check that your installed FFmpeg build includes it.
Do not copy an example command unchanged: adapt its input, mapping, codec, and output to your stream and installed FFmpeg build. If audio exists before the relay but disappears after it, focus on the command’s mapping, disabled-audio options, codec handling, and runtime errors.

4. Compare the outgoing audio with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance accepts AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, its recommended advanced settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio, the recommendations are 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; YouTube says 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. These are recommendations, not proof that any deviation will cause complete silence. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance (accessed 2026-10-03).
Compare the audio codec, channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate at the stream leaving your relay with those settings. If your configuration differs, try a controlled test using a supported codec and the recommended settings for your channel layout.

5. Check YouTube ingest health
Start a private or otherwise controlled test stream and open YouTube Live Control Room. Review its stream-health display and messages while the test is running. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring the health messages. A quiet test signal will not establish that the normal program audio works.
If you use the YouTube Live Streaming API, inspect the stream resource’s status.streamStatus, status.healthStatus, and configuration issues. The resource documents audio bitrate issue types, which can help identify an audio configuration problem at the destination. Use the reported issue rather than guessing: YouTube LiveStreams resource.

If YouTube reports absent or misconfigured audio, return to the pipeline and find the earliest hop that lacks the track. A video picture at YouTube does not prove that audio survived the encoder and relay.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Distinguish ingest trouble from playback trouble
If YouTube’s health display indicates that audio is present and healthy but one viewer hears silence, compare playback on another browser or device. Check that the player is not muted, its volume is up, and the expected audio track is selected. If the alternate playback works, the issue is likely at the original playback endpoint rather than in the Nginx relay. If multiple playback checks are silent or YouTube reports an audio issue, resume the hop-by-hop checks upstream.

7. Troubleshoot RTMPS only when transport points that way
RTMPS configuration is a secondary check for an audio-only symptom: a transport problem is more likely to prevent or disrupt ingest than to explain why video arrives with no sound. If your encoder reports RTMPS connection errors, verify that it uses YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint and the required connection details. YouTube’s guide specifies port 443 and an SNI hostname requirement; it states, “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.” See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide (last updated 2026-09-14 UTC).
Quick symptom-to-check guide
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The original source is silent | Source application, input selection, mute state, channel assignment, or permissions. |
| The source has sound, but the encoder output has no audio track | Encoder audio-input and output settings. |
| The encoder has audio, but local RTMP playback is silent | Nginx RTMP application and the encoder-to-Nginx forwarding path. |
| Local playback has sound, but YouTube reports an audio issue | FFmpeg mapping, disabled audio, output codec, encoder logs, and YouTube-compatible audio settings. |
| YouTube reports healthy audio, but one playback device is silent | That browser or device’s mute, volume, and selected audio track; compare on another endpoint. |
| The encoder reports RTMPS connection errors | RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and SNI hostname configuration. |
What to collect if the cause is still unclear
For setup-specific troubleshooting, gather the encoder name and audio-input settings, the FFmpeg command and relevant log lines, the active Nginx RTMP application configuration, whether local RTMP playback has sound, and the exact YouTube Live Control Room health message. Those details show where to continue tracing without assuming a universal cause.
