A black screen does not point to one cause. Find where the picture disappears: check the encoder’s source, the stream entering and leaving NGINX, then YouTube’s Live Control Room. Once you know which stage is failing, check the forwarding destination, stream key, video codec and encoder settings rather than changing NGINX at random.
Trace the video from source to YouTube
A connected RTMP session does not prove that valid video is reaching YouTube. Check the three stages in order so you can locate the break before changing settings.
- Check the encoder or source preview. Confirm that it shows moving video. If it is black there, investigate the camera, screen-capture source, scene or encoder input first; the relay cannot forward a picture it never receives.
- Compare the stream entering and leaving NGINX. If you can inspect both, determine whether the incoming stream has a picture and whether the outgoing stream still does. A visible input but black output narrows the investigation to relay configuration or forwarding/encoding; a black input points upstream. The exact inspection tool depends on your deployment.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room while publishing. Review stream health and any displayed errors. A network connection alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving valid, visible video. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube encoder settings).
Verify the NGINX-to-YouTube destination
Check that the relay is sending to the current YouTube ingest URL and the intended stream key, and that your NGINX RTMP application and stream path actually forward the publisher to that destination. YouTube’s ingestion configuration distinguishes primary and backup stream URLs (YouTube LiveStreams API).
If YouTube reports an invalid key, create or select a valid key in Live Control Room and update the encoder or relay configuration that publishes to YouTube. Never include a real stream key in logs, screenshots or public configuration snippets. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents stream ingestion and status configuration (YouTube Live Streaming API).

#1 Best Overall
- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
There is no single NGINX directive that can be prescribed from the symptom alone. NGINX’s documentation describes its RTMP dynamic module as enabling RTMP, HLS and DASH, but that page is for NGINX Plus and does not establish identical packaging or directives for every third-party RTMP module or build (NGINX RTMP dynamic module). Confirm which module, version and configuration your server actually uses before applying module-specific advice.
Check video compatibility and encoder settings
Inspect the encoder’s actual outgoing video stream, not just its connection status. YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs, and AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. It also recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP (YouTube encoder settings).

- Video present? Confirm the encoder is producing a video track and that the selected source or scene is not blank.
- Codec: Check the output codec against YouTube’s supported list; do not infer codec compatibility from a successful RTMP connection.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where the encoder allows it; do not exceed four seconds, per YouTube’s guidance.
- Rate control: Use CBR as recommended by YouTube.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS when configuring the YouTube destination.
Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate and codec
There is no universal bitrate fix for a black screen: YouTube’s recommendation varies with codec, resolution and frame rate. For one specific example, YouTube’s current table gives H.264 at 1080p/30 fps a 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended bitrate; the same row lists 14 Mbps as its maximum. Use the applicable row in YouTube’s table for your chosen output rather than applying this example to other formats (YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table).
Run a representative test and narrow the fault
YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and moving video similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health and messages while publishing. Change one relevant setting at a time and repeat the test, so you can tell which change affected the result (YouTube encoder settings).

| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| The source preview is black | Check the camera, capture source, scene or encoder input before troubleshooting the relay. |
| Source is visible, but NGINX output is black | Inspect the relay’s application/path and forwarding or encoding configuration; confirm the incoming stream is visible. |
| NGINX output is visible, but YouTube is black or reports a problem | Check the current ingest URL and key, Live Control Room stream health, and the outgoing codec and settings. |
| Connection succeeds but no picture appears | Verify that the encoder is actually publishing a supported video track; a successful connection is not proof of visible video. |
Common causes and fixes
- Black source or scene: Correct the camera, capture source, scene selection or encoder input. Do not start by rewriting relay settings when the source itself has no picture.
- Relay forwards the wrong path or destination: Verify the NGINX RTMP application/path, YouTube ingest URL and intended key together. Exact directives vary by module and deployment.
- Invalid or outdated stream key: Select or create a valid key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the publisher configuration. Keep the key private.
- Unsupported or absent video: Inspect the encoder’s output codec and confirm it is sending an actual video track. Compare it with YouTube’s supported codecs.
- Encoder settings do not match the selected output: Check CBR, keyframe interval and the bitrate guidance for the exact codec, resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current table.
- YouTube reports stream-health errors: Use the messages shown in Live Control Room to guide the next check, and test again with representative audio and movement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own encoder and NGINX relay: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo sends to YouTube only and does not stream from a camera.
