Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can run SRS in Docker as an RTMP relay between a video source and YouTube, but the SRS quick-start command alone is not a complete 24/7 setup. You also need an encoder or publisher to send the video to SRS, an outgoing leg configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and a deployment plan for restarts, monitoring, and stream recovery.
What SRS does in a YouTube streaming setup
SRS is a media server in the middle of the pipeline; it is neither the video source nor YouTube. A typical arrangement is:
Video file, camera, or production source → FFmpeg or OBS → SRS over RTMP → an outgoing publisher or relay → YouTube ingest.
SRS can accept an RTMP publish and serve streams through protocols such as RTMP, HTTP-FLV, and HLS. It can be useful when you need a relay, local playback, protocol conversion, or multiple consumers. If FFmpeg can publish directly to YouTube and those SRS functions are not needed, adding SRS introduces another service to configure and supervise. SRS’s Docker quick start demonstrates publishing to SRS and playing the local stream; it does not by itself configure the complete outbound YouTube relay. Before you start
- A host that can run Docker and stay powered, connected, and available continuously.
- A video source or production encoder. For a prerecorded loop, the example below uses FFmpeg.
- A YouTube live stream configured in Live Control Room, with its server URL and stream key.
- Enough dependable upload bandwidth for the selected video settings, plus a process supervision and monitoring plan for continuous operation.
Expose only the ports your chosen setup needs. SRS’s basic example uses RTMP port 1935, HTTP-FLV/HLS port 8080, and API port 1985. A minimal RTMP ingest and relay may not require the browser playback or API ports; do not expose them simply because they appear in a demonstration.
Run SRS in Docker and publish a test stream
1. Check the image and documentation version
The SRS Docker page is labeled v8, while its example command uses the image tag ossrs/srs:5. That mismatch matters: check the current image tag and use configuration matching the version you actually deploy. The following command reproduces the documented demonstration, not a production recommendation.
2. Start the SRS example container
docker run --rm -it -p 1935:1935 -p 8080:8080 -p 1985:1985 ossrs/srs:5
This runs in the foreground. The --rm option removes the container when it exits; the command does not provide persistent configuration or restart supervision. Keep a terminal open for this local test.

3. Publish a looped file into SRS
In a second terminal on the same host, publish an existing media file with FFmpeg. Replace input.mp4 with your file path:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost/live/livestream
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. This example copies the file’s existing audio and video streams; it does not convert them to settings suitable for every input or destination. If the codecs or container are incompatible with your intended path, configure a suitable encode rather than assuming stream copy will work.
4. Confirm local playback
The SRS quick start demonstrates local playback using RTMP, HTTP-FLV, and HLS URLs. With the example stream name, test the protocol you enabled—for example, rtmp://localhost/live/livestream or the corresponding HTTP-FLV/HLS endpoint documented for your selected SRS version. Local playback confirms the source-to-SRS leg; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving a stream.

Connect the outgoing stream to YouTube
1. Get the ingest URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Configure the outgoing encoder or publisher with both values. YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public examples, screenshots, shell history, or logs. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. SRS’s local quick-start publishing command does not automatically forward the feed to YouTube. You must configure an outbound publisher/relay or another encoder to read the SRS stream and send it to YouTube’s ingest URL with the key. The exact SRS configuration depends on the version and relay method you choose, so follow the documentation matching that deployment rather than treating the local example as a ready-made relay configuration.
2. Prefer secure ingest and validate before going public
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion. Start with a private test or preview, check YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and confirm both audio and video before making the stream public. YouTube’s settings guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Encoder settings that affect delivery
YouTube’s published guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the H.264 examples below are YouTube guidance accessed in 2026, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee of image quality or reliability.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
| H.264 format | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Choose resolution and frame rate that your source and sustained upload capacity can support. A bitrate at or above a listed value does not compensate for an unstable connection. When transcoding, apply the chosen codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval, and audio settings in the encoder that actually sends the stream to YouTube.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes a setup genuinely continuous
Looping a file and keeping a process running are different problems. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats its input, but it does not restart a crashed process, restore a failed host or network, or guarantee that YouTube keeps the live session open. The SRS example’s foreground docker run --rm -it command is for demonstration, not a 24/7 supervision strategy.
For an unattended deployment, choose and test an operator-managed approach for container or process restart, persistent configuration, logs and alerts, host availability, and recovery when YouTube ends or drops the stream. A container restart policy or orchestrator can address some process failures, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every upstream, network, host, credential, or platform issue. Plan how you will detect a failed outbound leg and restore it.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single session running beyond that threshold will be archived under the same guidance, or promise seamless unattended session turnover without verifying YouTube’s current workflow. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect to SRS | SRS is not running, the port is not reachable, or the publish URL does not match the configured endpoint. | Check the container is running, port 1935 is published and permitted by the host firewall, and the URL and stream name match the SRS configuration. |
| The stream plays locally but YouTube shows no video | The outbound publisher is missing or misconfigured; local SRS playback only validates the first hop. | Check the outgoing publisher’s destination URL, stream key, and connection status, then inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health. |
| YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health | Upload capacity may be insufficient or inconsistent, or encoder settings may not match the source and destination. | Check sustained upload capacity, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and the recommended keyframe interval. Test before going public. |
| The stream stops when a terminal closes or the container exits | The foreground demonstration command has no persistent service supervision. | Use a deployment-specific supervisor or orchestrator, configure restart behavior, and monitor the process and outbound leg. |
| YouTube rejects the key or the stream unexpectedly loses authorization | The wrong stream credentials may be configured, or a key may have been reset or exposed. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, update the outgoing publisher, and reset a compromised key. |
| Audio or video will not play through the chosen path | The input’s codecs may not suit the stream-copy example or the receiving workflow. | Inspect the input formats and configure a compatible encode; validate a test feed locally and in YouTube preview. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Technical continuity does not grant rights to rebroadcast a documentary, soundtrack, archive clip, or other prerecorded material. Before looping content, confirm that you hold the necessary rights and that the use complies with YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. A stream that is technically live can still receive a claim, restriction, or removal.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming uploaded videos to YouTube and would rather not operate Docker, FFmpeg, a continuously available host, and restart supervision, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
