Nginx RTMP on a Raspberry Pi for a 24/7 YouTube Stream: Setup and Limits

A Raspberry Pi can relay a YouTube stream, but NGINX RTMP is only one part of the setup. Learn how to plan the feed, match YouTube’s settings, test the workload and monitor failures.

A Raspberry Pi can be part of a 24/7 YouTube streaming setup, but NGINX RTMP is only one part of the chain: it receives and relays a stream, while another source must provide the video and, if needed, encode it. A Pi relaying an already encoded feed does different work from one capturing and encoding video itself. Neither the available YouTube guidance nor Raspberry Pi documentation establishes a maximum stream profile or guaranteed uptime for a particular Pi and NGINX build, so treat continuous operation as something to test and monitor—not a promise.

Understand the streaming chain before installing anything

Plan the path from video source to YouTube first. NGINX with an RTMP module can sit between a source and YouTube, but it is not, by itself, a camera-capture tool or general-purpose video encoder. A player, camera system, or other encoder must produce the input stream. Decide whether the Pi will pass an already encoded stream onward or also capture and encode it; those are materially different workloads.

Design What the Pi does What to establish before deployment
Relay an encoded feed Receives and forwards the incoming stream. Confirm the input protocol and stream stability, and verify that the Pi and module can relay the selected profile under sustained conditions.
Capture or encode on the Pi Handles video input and may encode it before forwarding. Confirm the capture path, codec, resolution, frame rate, audio path, and sustained processing load on the exact hardware.

A 24/7 plan also needs a continuous source. If the source stops, the relay cannot create new video. NGINX alone does not manage the full YouTube broadcast lifecycle or guarantee that a stream will resume after every failure.

Plan YouTube’s ingest settings

Get the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, rather than relying on an old copied endpoint. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Use RTMPS when the encoder and NGINX RTMP path you choose support it; YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL.

For encoder output, YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Match your encoder to YouTube’s current settings guidance and the actual capabilities of your source and relay chain. The bitrate figures below are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a Raspberry Pi can encode or relay each profile.

H.264 output profile YouTube Help bitrate guidance
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum / 8 Mbps recommended
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum / 14 Mbps recommended
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps minimum / 17 Mbps recommended

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate using the relevant YouTube guidance and your measured, stable upload capacity; leave practical headroom rather than assuming a speed-test peak will be available continuously. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance in Live Control Room.

Set up the Pi and NGINX RTMP path

  1. Document the source. Record how video reaches the Pi, its input protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio path. Identify which device encodes the stream and whether the Pi is relaying or doing additional processing.
  2. Choose a compatible module and build. Install an NGINX RTMP module that matches the Pi’s operating system, NGINX version, and build. Packaging and configuration vary. The cited NGINX documentation covers the NGINX Plus dynamic module; its package commands should not be treated as universal instructions for community NGINX on Raspberry Pi OS.
  3. Configure the module for the chosen input and destination. Follow the documentation for the exact module and build to accept the source and publish to YouTube’s current ingest endpoint using the stream key. Do not expose the key in public configuration, screenshots, or logs. If you change the key, update the publishing configuration too.
  4. Check the configuration before applying it. Use the configuration test supported by your installed NGINX build, resolve any errors, and only then reload or restart NGINX according to that installation’s service setup. A successful configuration test confirms syntax, not that the source, network, or YouTube ingest will work.
  5. Match and verify the encoder output. Set CBR, a supported codec, the intended resolution and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). Check that the audio path is present and compatible with the selected encoder setup; confirm the actual output rather than assuming the source’s settings carry through unchanged.
  6. Send a representative test stream. Before relying on it, test with moving video and audio similar to the intended programme. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and review its stream-health messages. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast.
  7. Arrange supervision and recovery. Decide how the NGINX process and video source are started, what happens after a process or network failure, where logs are kept, and how someone will learn that the stream has stopped or its health has degraded. Check local process and source status alongside YouTube’s active/inactive and health signals.

There is no single copy-and-paste installation sequence that is reliable across Pi OS releases, NGINX builds, and RTMP modules. In particular, a third-party example that supervises FFmpeg with systemd illustrates one possible service architecture; it is not an NGINX installation recipe or proof of round-the-clock uptime for this setup.

Check whether the Pi can sustain the real workload

Model and processing load

Evaluate the exact Pi model, module, input, codec, output settings, and peripherals together. No controlled comparison establishes a maximum resolution or sustained profile for a complete Raspberry Pi/NGINX RTMP/YouTube chain. Do not infer that a model can encode a profile simply because it can relay an already encoded one. Test the actual stream over a representative sustained period and watch for dropped frames, process instability, or thermal throttling.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.

Heat and cooling

Raspberry Pi hardware documentation identifies 85°C as the thermal limit across models, with frequency reduction used to manage rising temperatures. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 Pi 5 stress-test article reported temperatures above that limit under sustained heavy load without cooling; in its test setup, the Active Cooler stabilized temperatures around 60°C, with a reported maximum of 62–63°C. Those are the article’s test conditions, not a streaming benchmark. Cooling is therefore a workload-dependent decision: measure your setup rather than assuming every relay needs a fan or that an encoding workload can run without one.

Power and peripherals

For Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/5A supply. Requirements vary by model and attached devices, so account for the board, capture equipment, storage, and other peripherals you actually use. An inadequate or poor-quality supply can cause low-voltage warnings and unpredictable behavior; choose a supply for the full load, not the board in isolation.

Network capacity and continuity

Compare the target output bitrate with measured upload capacity and stability over time. A connection that briefly reaches the target is not evidence it can sustain it. Include the network path and the source device in testing: a healthy NGINX process cannot compensate for a failed feed or an unstable connection.

  • Source or capture failure: check that the camera, player, or upstream encoder is still producing the expected input.
  • Encoder or relay failure: supervise the relevant process, retain logs, and decide how it should be restarted. Test that recovery rather than assuming it works.
  • Network interruption: observe local connectivity and YouTube’s stream status; verify how your chosen source and module behave when the connection returns.
  • YouTube ingest or stream-health problem: watch YouTube’s active/inactive and health signals and define who responds to an alert.
  • Power or thermal problem: monitor for low-voltage warnings and excessive temperatures under the real sustained workload.

Automatic process restarts can reduce the time a local process remains down, but they do not prove that the video source restarted, that YouTube accepted the feed, or that the stream stayed live. Test the full recovery path and set expectations accordingly; the available guidance does not establish an uptime percentage for this particular build.

When a cloud service is a better fit

If the goal is to loop uploaded recordings on YouTube rather than stream live camera input, a cloud service can remove the home computer and network from the playback chain. StreamNeo is one option for YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to other platforms. See StreamNeo for details.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Plans have the same features and differ by duration. The first day is free with no card, once per account; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI works in India, and cards are accepted in India and worldwide. If you need five or more slots, contact support.

StreamNeo is a different architecture from a Pi/NGINX setup: nothing has to stay on at home, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps uses one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. To try it, start a StreamNeo account.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to inspect Next check
NGINX fails to start or reload Module/build compatibility or configuration syntax. Confirm that the RTMP module matches the installed NGINX build, test the configuration, and inspect the service logs before reloading again.
YouTube does not receive the stream Ingest URL, stream key, publishing configuration, or network path. Copy the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, check the configured destination and connectivity, and keep the key private.
Stream health is poor or video stutters Upload instability, bitrate, source, or processing load. Compare sustained upload capacity with the selected bitrate, inspect source and process behavior, and test a lower supported profile if the connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen one.
Stream stops after a while Source, encoder, relay, power, heat, or connection failure. Check logs and YouTube status, then verify source output, process state, temperature, low-voltage warnings, and network stability under sustained load.
Audio or motion is missing or wrong Input or encoder configuration. Test the actual audio and moving video path end to end before going live, and inspect the encoded output rather than only the source settings.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Technical delivery does not grant rights to the video or music. Before looping recordings, confirm you have permission to use every included work and check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and channel policies. Reused or repetitive material can also raise monetization and channel-policy questions independent of whether the stream technically works. A successful test stream is not a copyright or policy clearance.
