It is possible to run a continuous YouTube stream from FFmpeg on an Indian VPS, but a ₹1,000 monthly budget does not guarantee enough bandwidth. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates, a 30-day stream uses about 2.59 TB at 720p30 or 4.54 TB at 1080p30, before overhead. Several low-cost Indian VPS listings have quotas below those amounts. Check the included transfer, taxes, renewal price and streaming-use terms before ordering.
What a ₹1,000 VPS budget can—and cannot—cover
The monthly sticker price is only one part of the calculation. A VPS must also have a sufficient monthly transfer allowance, a stable route to YouTube’s ingest servers, enough CPU for the chosen encoding workload, and terms that permit sustained streaming. The Indian plan listings below show that inexpensive compute is available; they do not establish that every plan can carry a recommended-quality 24/7 stream.
YouTube transcodes a live stream into viewer formats, so the VPS sends one selected ingest feed rather than encoding every viewer rendition. A provider’s advertised port speed is not the same as monthly transfer capacity: a fast connection can still exhaust a small quota.
Estimate monthly transfer before choosing a plan
For a steady stream, approximate data use as bitrate × seconds streamed ÷ 8. The following decimal-unit estimates assume 30 days of continuous transmission and exclude protocol overhead. YouTube’s H.264 settings guide provides the example rates and recommends testing stream health before going live.

| H.264 video setting | YouTube bitrate guidance | Approximate 30-day transfer |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30, recommended | 14 Mbps | 4.54 TB, before overhead |
| 720p30, recommended | 8 Mbps | 2.59 TB, before overhead |
| 1080p30, listed minimum | 5 Mbps | 1.62 TB, before overhead |
| 720p30, listed minimum | 3 Mbps | 0.97 TB, before overhead |
These figures are calculations from the listed bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality or a provider’s billing total. Actual usage changes with uptime, audio, mux and network overhead, and the provider’s method of counting traffic. Minimum encoder bitrates are not a promise of acceptable quality for every source. Leave quota headroom and ask whether outbound traffic is metered, throttled or billed separately.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio it lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension. Confirm current requirements in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.
Indian VPS listings: compare transfer, not just price
These are examples from provider listings, not endorsements or confirmation that continuous YouTube streaming is permitted. Prices and availability can change. A real budget should include applicable GST, renewal pricing and any bandwidth add-ons; the cited listings do not establish all of those costs.
| Provider and plan | Listed price | Listed resources | Transfer and practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| IndiaWebHost Cloud 1 | ₹499/month plus GST | 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe | 2 TB. Below the approximate 2.59 TB needed for recommended 720p30, before overhead. |
| VyomCloud GPC.NANO02 | ₹360/month | 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB storage | 0.50 TB; far below the estimates for the listed YouTube settings. |
| VyomCloud GPC.MICRO02 | ₹1,040/month | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB storage | 2 TB. Below recommended 720p30 transfer needs; the listing states 100 Mbps bandwidth and a 99.5% uptime SLA. That SLA is the provider’s advertised commitment, not independently measured stream uptime. |
| VPSWala VPS 2 | ₹298/month, excluding GST | 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB NVMe | 100 GB. The listing says its catalogue and prices were reviewed on 21 August 2026; this quota is far below continuous streaming needs at the cited settings. |
| AIC Cloud Essential 2 GB | ₹199/month | 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD; India (Mumbai) deployment option listed | Transfer allowance is not stated on the cited result. Confirm it before considering the plan for a continuous stream. |
None of these examples establishes both enough transfer for recommended 720p or 1080p operation and a total monthly cost within ₹1,000. A different plan, lower bitrate, separate bandwidth product or billing arrangement may change the result. Before paying, verify total price after tax and renewal, transfer quota and overage policy, fair-use rules for sustained traffic, streaming permission, server location and the route to YouTube ingest.

Prepare YouTube Live and the VPS
1. Get the current ingest details from YouTube
Create or select a YouTube Live broadcast in Live Control Room and retrieve its current ingest URL and stream key there. Google documents RTMPS ingestion for encoders in its YouTube RTMPS guide. Do not copy example credentials from a tutorial or expose the key in a public script, screenshot or shared log.
2. Install FFmpeg and check the media
On a Debian- or Ubuntu-based VPS, install the distribution package with sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg, then confirm it is available with ffmpeg -version. Upload or otherwise make the source files accessible to the account that will run FFmpeg. Check their codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio and duration; ensure the playlist files are present and readable.
Copying already-compatible encoded audio and video avoids real-time video encoding, but it does not eliminate the need to test the complete stream. Transcoding, especially software encoding at higher resolution or frame rate, uses substantially more CPU. A one-vCPU plan is not proven adequate for every FFmpeg transcode: test the actual source, codec, resolution and frame rate, and watch CPU headroom.
3. Choose copy or transcode deliberately
If the media is already encoded in a format suitable for your stream, FFmpeg can copy the audio and video rather than re-encode them. For a single file, a basic looping RTMPS example is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/video.mp4
-c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This example assumes the input’s codecs and container can be sent in the selected live workflow. If YouTube reports an unsupported format, invalid bitrate or unhealthy stream, inspect the input and use compatible settings rather than assuming stream copy will work for every file.
When you need to encode an H.264 720p30 output, one starting example is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/video.mp4
-vf "scale=-2:720,fps=30" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
The example uses 8 Mbps video, the recommended H.264 video rate listed by YouTube for 720p30, a 60-frame GOP for a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps, and stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Match the output to your source and YouTube’s current guidance; a transcode can consume more CPU than a copy. Plan transfer for the actual video and audio output plus overhead.
For a playlist, create a readable FFmpeg concat-demuxer list such as /srv/stream/list.txt, with one entry per file, for example file '/srv/stream/part-1.mp4'. Then use -f concat -safe 0 -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/list.txt instead of the single-file input options. Keep paths valid for the service account and test that the last item returns to the first as intended.

4. Protect the key and start a test broadcast
Keep credentials out of shell history and world-readable scripts. One approach is to place the URL and key in a dedicated environment file readable only by the service account, then load it from a systemd unit. For example, create /etc/ffmpeg-stream.env, set its owner to the account running the stream, and restrict permissions with chmod 600 /etc/ffmpeg-stream.env. Define YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY there. Do not paste the actual key into a public command, article, support ticket or screenshot.
Before relying on the VPS, start a test broadcast at the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, confirm the correct audio/video, and verify playback on the channel. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health during an event in its encoder settings guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep FFmpeg running with systemd—and monitor it
A systemd service can start the process at boot and restart it after an abnormal exit. It does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: the VPS can lose network access, YouTube can reject or drop the feed, the source can fail, or the provider can enforce a quota or policy.
Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-stream.service and adapt the paths and service account to your VPS:

For a transcoding setup or playlist, replace ExecStart with the tested command and input. Then run sudo systemctl daemon-reload, sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-stream.service, and inspect status with sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-stream.service. Review process logs with sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-stream.service -f. Confirm that the unit can read the media and environment file under its service account.
Test recovery intentionally before depending on the setup: restart the service, verify the broadcast recovers in YouTube Live Control Room, and check the logs for repeated failure loops. Monitor VPS CPU, memory, network traffic and provider quota, as well as YouTube’s stream health. A service manager can relaunch FFmpeg after process failure or reboot; it cannot diagnose every upstream failure or promise zero downtime.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm outbound connectivity, and inspect FFmpeg and systemd logs. Regenerate credentials if the key may have been exposed.
- Stream health warns about bitrate or keyframes: Confirm the actual output settings, CBR behavior and keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and warns against intervals over four seconds. Compare the output to the current encoder guide rather than relying on an input file’s properties.
- Video or audio is rejected or missing: Inspect the source codecs and test a compatible transcode. For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- FFmpeg exits or restarts repeatedly: Check paths, file permissions, source integrity, available disk space, memory and CPU use. Use logs to distinguish a bad input from an encoding or connection failure; restarting without fixing the cause can create a loop.
- The provider suspends, throttles or bills the stream unexpectedly: Check transfer accounting, quota enforcement, overage rates, fair-use policy and whether sustained streaming is allowed. A 100 Mbps port claim does not mean the plan includes enough monthly data.
- The channel has rights or monetization problems: Stream only footage, music and other material you have the rights to use. A loop is still a public live broadcast; technical ability to stream does not establish permission under copyright rules or YouTube policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video looping on YouTube without maintaining a VPS and FFmpeg service, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-live service.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the loop runs from the cloud.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams. If you want to try it, start with StreamNeo’s free day.

A continuous documentary loop still needs media rights that cover the use you are making of it, including footage, music and any third-party material. Do not assume that a video is free to stream because it is online, old, or available for download. Review the applicable licence and YouTube rules before scheduling it. A VPS or cloud loop automates delivery; neither grants permission to broadcast the underlying work.
