FFmpeg YouTube Livestream Keeps Disconnecting: How to Diagnose It and Set Up Reconnects

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags are not a universal fix for YouTube RTMP(S) publishing. Diagnose the failing side, verify the destination, and check YouTube’s encoder guidance.

There is no universal FFmpeg reconnect flag that fixes a YouTube publishing connection. The commonly cited options—such as reconnect and reconnect_at_eof—are documented for FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol, not as a general repair for an RTMP or RTMPS output. First determine whether FFmpeg’s input is dropping or its connection to YouTube is dropping; then troubleshoot that side.

First identify which connection is failing

A live FFmpeg job has at least two relevant sides: the source FFmpeg reads and the destination it publishes to. Reconnecting the source will not repair a failed YouTube output, and changing YouTube settings will not restore an input that has ended.

What you observe Where to investigate first
FFmpeg reports errors reading or opening the input, or the source stops supplying media The input URL, source service, network path, and the input protocol’s supported reconnect options.
FFmpeg continues reading the source but reports output, connection, timeout, or publishing errors The YouTube destination URL and key, RTMP/RTMPS connectivity, encoder settings, and Live Control Room stream health.
The process exits or the media reaches its end Whether the source is meant to be endless or whether the command needs a deliberate loop or restart strategy. HTTP EOF options only apply to HTTP inputs; they are not a general RTMP publishing fix.

Use the exact FFmpeg error and the point in the log where it appears to distinguish these cases. A generic “reconnect” command cannot be responsibly prescribed without the FFmpeg build, full command with secrets removed, input protocol, and exact error.

What FFmpeg reconnect flags actually do

FFmpeg documents these options under its HTTP protocol. They govern HTTP requests or streams. They do not automatically reconnect an RTMP(S) output publishing to YouTube.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HTTP option Documented purpose
reconnect Reconnect after a disconnect before the input reaches EOF.
reconnect_at_eof Treat EOF as an error and reconnect; intended for live or endless streams.
reconnect_on_network_error Reconnect for network errors.
reconnect_streamed Allow reconnects for streamed, non-seekable HTTP inputs as well.
reconnect_delay_max Set the maximum reconnect delay.
reconnect_max_retries Limit the number of reconnect attempts.
reconnect_delay_total_max Limit total time spent waiting through reconnect delays.

Before using an option, check whether your installed build supports it with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Option availability and behavior can vary by build. Apply HTTP reconnect options to an HTTP input only when that is the side failing; do not treat them as a cure for an RTMP(S) output disconnection.

Check the YouTube destination and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify the stream URL and stream key for the intended stream. Copy the current values rather than relying on an old command or saved configuration.
  2. Use the RTMPS destination supplied by YouTube when your FFmpeg setup and network support it. YouTube documents its RTMPS setup at YouTube RTMPS setup.
  3. For a connection timeout, recheck the destination URL, network reachability, and RTMPS support. For an SSL or TLS error, check that the URL uses rtmps, not rtmp; use the port appropriate to the exact URL YouTube supplied. Port 443 may be appropriate where that destination specifies it.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password. Redact it from logs, screenshots, and any command you share for troubleshooting. You can review stream configuration in YouTube’s live stream settings.

Match encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance

Correct settings cannot guarantee a stable connection, but they remove common configuration mismatches. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers supported protocols, codecs, bitrate recommendations, and keyframes. Check its current tables for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Protocol: YouTube identifies RTMP and RTMPS for ingest; use the provided RTMPS destination when supported.
  • Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 support. Choose a codec and profile compatible with your encoder and workflow.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3 support.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate and bitrate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps and provides bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a connection will remain stable.

Compare the configured output bitrate with both YouTube’s current recommendation and your measured sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and running a representative preflight stream. Leave capacity for ordinary network variation instead of assuming a speed-test peak is continuously available.

Preflight and observe a disconnect

  1. Run FFmpeg with the intended source, output URL, key, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings before the scheduled stream.
  2. Watch the FFmpeg log from the start through any failure. Note whether the error concerns input reads, output writes, a timeout, or TLS/SSL.
  3. Check Live Control Room’s stream health and messages at the same time. A platform-side warning can help distinguish an ingest/configuration problem from a local source failure.
  4. If you record a local archive, confirm its file size continues increasing. Monitor audio and video, not just whether the process remains running.
  5. If you have a backup encoder configured, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirm that the player switches to the backup. YouTube describes this operational check in its live streaming tips.

Common failure symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
HTTP source drops or returns EOF Input protocol and source behavior Check ffmpeg -h protocol=http and use supported HTTP reconnect options only if appropriate for that input.
RTMP(S) output disconnects while input continues YouTube ingest path or destination configuration Verify the Live Control Room URL and key, RTMPS support, network path, and stream health. HTTP reconnect flags do not fix this output.
Timeout when connecting to YouTube Destination URL, port, or network reachability Copy the current supplied URL, confirm RTMPS support, and check that the network permits the required connection.
SSL/TLS error Protocol scheme or TLS connection Check that the destination is the supplied rtmps URL rather than rtmp, and use its specified port.
YouTube reports stream configuration or health warnings Encoder output Compare codec, CBR, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance.
FFmpeg stops when the media ends Input has reached EOF or process exited Determine whether the source should loop or be restarted. An HTTP EOF reconnect option is relevant only to a suitable HTTP input, not the publishing output.
