How to Fix a YouTube 24/7 Stream That Restarts When a Service Switches Videos

A restart at a video switch may be a new YouTube event or only a brief feed interruption. Use event status and service logs to isolate the cause before changing keys or network settings.

If your YouTube 24/7 stream appears to restart whenever a service switches videos, first find out whether YouTube ended the live event or whether the same event stayed live while its feed briefly cut out. If a service log shows that it stops and starts its output at each transition, investigate that service’s session behavior before changing stream keys or network settings.

The service and encoder are unspecified, so there is no single vendor setting that can be named as the fix. The steps below help isolate the cause and give you useful evidence for support.

First determine what “restart” means

  1. Note the transition time. Write down when the video changes and check the YouTube watch page and Live Control Room around that moment.
  2. Check whether the event itself ended. Did the existing live event report that the stream ended, or did a new event appear in the channel’s Live tab? Note whether the watch-page URL and event status stayed the same.
  3. Separate an event restart from a feed interruption. If the same event remained live but its picture went blank or stalled briefly, the interruption may be in the media feed or playback rather than a newly created event. Ask other viewers whether they saw it too; one viewer’s report alone does not establish a broadcast-side fault.
  4. Compare the timestamp with service and encoder records. Check the switching service’s activity log and the encoder’s status or error view. If you keep a local recording, inspect it around the transition. Timing is a clue, not proof of the cause.

Investigate the video-switching service first

Look in the service settings and documentation for how it changes videos. The key question is whether it switches sources inside one continuously running encoder output or stops and starts, or recreates, the encoder session at each change.

  • If the service log shows an output stop/start at the same moment as a new YouTube event, ask the provider how to switch media while keeping the outgoing YouTube session active. Look for a continuous-play or transition mode, but do not assume a setting exists without checking that service’s documentation.
  • If the same YouTube event remains live but the feed drops at the transition, inspect source handoff and transition settings, encoder errors, CPU load, and the outbound connection.
  • If the service’s logs do not show a stop or restart, compare their timestamps with encoder status and local recording before attributing the problem to the service.

YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how the encoder connects to YouTube; they do not specify how an unnamed third-party service must implement a playlist transition. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not guarantee that a particular switching method will preserve one uninterrupted event.

Check the stream key and destination only when indicated

Verify that the configured YouTube Live server URL and stream key belong to the intended event or reusable custom key. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address”; a custom key can be reused, and if you reset a key you must copy the replacement into the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not include it in a support message or publish it.

Changing or resetting a key is not a first-line response to a restart that occurs only when videos switch. YouTube’s advice to copy a key from Live Control Room is relevant to encoder startup or key errors, not evidence that the key caused a transition-related event restart. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and live-stream troubleshooting.

Use encoder and network checks when the feed is unhealthy

  • Inspect encoder health: check its errors, CPU load, source routing, and any local recording at the transition. Update the encoder if it is out of date, then compare whether the fault still occurs.
  • Check outbound stability: if the encoder reports dropped frames or disconnections, test the connection and whether the configured bitrate is within what it can sustain. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection.
  • Use Ethernet as a diagnostic, not a universal fix: if the encoder is on Wi-Fi or connection diagnostics point to instability, test with a wired connection. A Cat6 cable may be useful for that test. It will not fix a switching service that deliberately stops its output or creates a new YouTube event at each transition.
  • Compare viewer reports: if one viewer has trouble but others do not, check that viewer’s device and network. If multiple viewers on unrelated connections report errors, inspect encoder and feed health more closely.

For OBS-specific connection symptoms, see OBS connection troubleshooting. Lower bitrate only when connection capacity or diagnostics make it a plausible cause; it is not a remedy for a service-controlled session restart.

What YouTube’s stream lifecycle does—and does not—tell you

YouTube tells creators to connect an encoder using the Live server URL and stream key, and to end a stream by stopping the content sent from the encoder. Its guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the event and archive history to understand what happened after a stop, but do not assume every brief feed gap ends an event, or that a persistent key alone keeps one watch-page event alive through an arbitrary service restart. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Give support evidence they can act on

Send the streaming service provider the affected event URL, transition timestamps, event-status screenshots or exports, relevant service activity logs, and encoder status or error details. Say explicitly whether the same live event survived the transition. Never send the secret stream key. If YouTube’s incoming feed appears healthy but the service creates a new event, contact that service first; if the encoder or feed is unhealthy, follow YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and investigate the relevant network connection.
