Caption each recorded lesson, then separately ensure captions reach the YouTube Live output. A caption track attached to a lesson in YouTube Studio does not, by itself, establish that those captions will be sent with a separate 24/7 live stream. Prepare and review the lesson captions, configure a live-caption source if viewers need captions during the broadcast, and test the complete loop—including transitions and repeats—before going public.
Two caption workflows serve two different viewing experiences
A caption track on an uploaded lesson serves that video when it is watched as a YouTube video or archived recording. Captions on a live broadcast must reach the live stream itself. YouTube documents these as separate workflows: it explains how to manage captions for individual videos and how to send captions to a live stream, but does not promise that a stream encoder or looping service will extract and forward each source video’s caption track.
This distinction matters in a 24/7 channel. The lessons may each have accurate captions on their individual video pages while viewers watching the continuous live output receive no captions, or captions that do not match the current lesson. Treat lesson captioning and live caption delivery as two work items, and verify both in the actual player.
Prepare captions for every recorded lesson
Choose a caption file, transcript sync, or manual entry
In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, select the lesson, add or select its language, and choose a way to add captions. YouTube supports uploading a caption file, entering captions manually, or submitting transcript text for automatic synchronization. A caption file carries text and timing; some supported formats may also carry positioning and style information. YouTube identifies SRT and SBV as basic caption-file options. SRT files should be plain UTF-8; check YouTube’s current supported-file guidance for accepted formats before preparing a batch.

- Prepare one caption track per lesson and language. Keep the track with the lesson’s source files so it can be corrected and reused.
- Upload or create it in Studio. Use the lesson’s Subtitles area to upload the timed file, enter timed captions, or provide transcript text for auto-sync.
- Review and publish the track. Play the video with captions enabled and correct errors before relying on it for learners.
Review the content, not just whether captions appear
Automatic speech recognition can mishear speech because of accents, dialects, pronunciation, or background noise. YouTube recommends reviewing automatic captions. Check names, technical vocabulary, numbers, equations and symbols spoken aloud, punctuation, speaker changes, and timing. Add meaningful non-speech audio—such as a relevant alarm, music cue, or other sound—rather than transcribing speech alone. W3C’s WCAG guidance describes prerecorded captions as including speaker identification and meaningful non-speech audio.
Captions and translated subtitles are not interchangeable. Captions make audio information accessible in text; a translation may serve viewers who speak another language without representing all the audio information. W3C WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.2.2 addresses captions for prerecorded audio in synchronized media, except when the media is clearly labeled as a text alternative. That accessibility criterion is not a determination of which laws or institutional rules apply to a particular school, course, or country.

Send captions to the live stream separately
For a YouTube Live broadcast, configure a live caption source as part of the stream setup. YouTube documents two routes: captions embedded in the encoder output as EIA-608/CEA-708 data, or captions sent by supported software through HTTP. In YouTube’s event-style workflow, the creator enables closed captions, copies the signed caption ingestion URL, and provides it to the captioner or caption software. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed and advises keeping the system clock accurate.
The exact setup depends on the encoder or caption software used. Confirm that the chosen configuration can send captions to the YouTube live output; do not assume captions attached to a source lesson are extracted and forwarded automatically. The live-caption documentation does not establish how a particular encoder or continuous-stream service handles lesson changes, loops, or caption pass-through. Verify those behaviors with the production setup you intend to use.

Choose the route that matches your production

Choose based on whether learners watch the lesson as an individual video or the continuous live output, the languages and accuracy required, how captions stay synchronized through transitions and repeats, who monitors the feed, and what happens if the caption source fails. The last operational behaviors need testing for the actual setup; the platform guidance does not certify a specific 24/7 configuration.
Test the complete 24/7 viewing experience
- Run a private or unlisted test stream. Use the intended encoder, caption source, playlist order, and stream configuration. YouTube recommends test streams and monitoring stream quality.
- Check the viewer’s player. Confirm that captions can be enabled, appear in the intended language, match the words and sounds, and are synchronized with the audio.
- Test every boundary. Watch a transition from one lesson to the next, a repeat back to the beginning, and any slate, music, silence, or gap. Confirm captions do not continue displaying the previous lesson’s words or disappear unexpectedly.
- Check a long run. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a 24/7 session is archived as one complete video, nor does it establish caption-feed continuity or stream-splitting behavior beyond that boundary. Test longer than 12 hours if your planned session exceeds it, and confirm archiving and caption behavior rather than assuming either.
- Record operational ownership. Document the live caption input, the software or encoder carrying it, the responsible operator, and how the team will notice a failed or drifting feed.
Keep the lessons accurate, licensed, and useful
Caption accuracy is one part of making a course usable; it does not grant permission to broadcast the lesson. Before scheduling a continuous stream, confirm that you have the rights needed for every lesson, image, music track, and other included material. Keep records of permissions where relevant. A lesson being previously uploaded or captioned does not by itself establish rights for a new broadcast.
