In OBS, put your recorded study video in a looping Media Source, add the countdown as a separate Text, Browser, or prerecorded Media source, and place it above the footage in the Sources list. Before leaving the stream unattended, preview a full study-and-break cycle to confirm the timer resets when intended and remains readable.
Build the looping study stream in OBS
- Create or select a scene. Use the scene containing the recorded study footage, or create a scene for it.
- Add the study recording. In Sources, add a Media Source and select the local video. Open its properties and enable Loop so playback restarts at the end. OBS lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among its supported media formats. OBS Media Sources
- Add the timer. Choose a Text source for a fixed label, a Browser source for a webpage-based timer, or a second Media Source for a prerecorded countdown clip. OBS supports these source types, but its source documentation does not describe a built-in countdown procedure. OBS Sources Guide
- Layer and position it. Move the timer source above the study video in the Sources list. Use the preview transform controls to position and resize it over the footage.
- Check the full cycle. Preview from the start through the break and the return to study footage. Confirm the timer starts and resets at the intended points, stays legible against both light and dark footage, and does not obscure important content. Check source visibility and audio before leaving the stream unattended.
Choose a timer that fits the cycle

A vendor-authored guide describes controlling a hosted timer through a Browser source, but that is one possible implementation, not a required or independently vetted service. Test any timer page you choose before relying on it.
Loop a playlist of study recordings
If the stream should rotate through several recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source to create a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
Plan the timer around the playlist’s actual sequence. A countdown clip that works for one recording may become out of sync if the playlist’s durations differ or playback behavior changes. Preview the transitions you intend to broadcast.

Use YouTube’s break overlay only for an operator-managed pause
YouTube’s Take a Break feature in Live Control Room can provide an away slate. To use its overlay in OBS, copy the overlay URL from the break overlay settings, add it as a Browser source, set its dimensions to the stream resolution, and enable Shutdown source when not visible. YouTube recommends testing the overlay before going live. YouTube Help
This overlay is not an unattended countdown: return to Live Control Room and hide it when you are ready to resume. It also does not mute other stream audio sources. Mute a microphone separately before stepping away, and if the slate includes video audio, confirm that audio is routed into the stream.
