How to Restart FFmpeg Automatically When a Sleep Sounds Stream Crashes

Configure systemd to restart a failed FFmpeg sleep-sounds stream, and learn when protocol reconnects, FIFO recovery, or a separate health check is needed.

On a Linux host that uses systemd, run FFmpeg as a service and set Restart=on-failure with a short RestartSec= delay. That restarts FFmpeg after an eligible process failure. It does not detect every problem: a process that stays alive while the audio is silent or frozen needs a separate health check, and a network disconnect may need protocol-specific recovery options.

First identify what stopped working

“Crash” can describe different failure layers. Choose the fix based on what you observe:

  • FFmpeg exited: use a process supervisor such as systemd.
  • A network input disconnected but FFmpeg is still running: consider reconnect options supported by that input protocol.
  • The network output failed: consider FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options, if they suit the output and its packet-loss trade-offs.
  • The service is active but audio has stopped: use a separate health check that tests output or progress; a process-exit policy alone may not notice.

The host operating system, input protocol, output destination, and whether the process exited or merely stalled all affect the right configuration. The systemd steps below apply to Linux systems using systemd.

Restart a crashed FFmpeg process with systemd

Create a service unit

Adapt this illustrative unit file; it is a template, not a tested configuration. Replace the user, paths, input, output format, and destination with values for your setup. The output format and URL are intentionally left for you to supply because the correct choices depend on the destination and the installed FFmpeg build.

Do not leave angle-bracket placeholders in a live unit. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the input and output formats you select, and that the chosen audio codec and container work together for the destination. Keep stream keys and other credentials out of world-readable unit files; use a suitably protected configuration mechanism.

Install and start it

  1. Save the completed unit as /etc/systemd/system/sleep-sounds.service.
  2. Reload systemd’s unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  3. Enable the service at boot and start it now: sudo systemctl enable --now sleep-sounds.service.
  4. Check its state: sudo systemctl status sleep-sounds.service.
  5. Inspect recent service logs if it fails: sudo journalctl -u sleep-sounds.service -n 100 --no-pager.

These commands assume a systemd-based Linux system and that you have permission to administer it. A service that fails repeatedly will keep retrying under this policy; use the logs to identify configuration, permissions, connectivity, or format errors rather than treating restarts as a fix for the underlying cause.

Understand the restart policy

Restart=on-failure restarts a service after a nonzero exit, qualifying abnormal signal termination, or timeout/watchdog failure. It does not automatically restart a deliberate clean stop by an operator or systemd, which helps keep intentional stops controllable. RestartSec=5s sets the wait before a restart; five seconds is just the example value above, not a universal recommendation. See the systemd service documentation for the policy details.

Make a local sleep-sounds file loop and run unattended

For a local file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping. Put it before the corresponding -i, as in the unit example. The -re option reads the file at its native rate, which is useful when pacing file input as a live stream. These options handle file looping and pacing; they do not restart a process that has exited. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Include -nostdin for unattended operation so FFmpeg does not check for console input. FFmpeg’s FAQ also describes redirecting standard input to /dev/null on Linux or macOS, or NUL on Windows, as an alternative. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Handle network failures at the right layer

Input connection: protocol-specific reconnect

For supported HTTP inputs, FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and retry delay or limit controls. These are input protocol options: they can help while FFmpeg is still running and handling a supported connection, but cannot supervise a process that has already exited. They are not universal flags for every protocol. Check the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the options available to your protocol and build.

Output connection: FIFO muxer recovery

For some network-output failures, the FFmpeg FIFO muxer offers controls such as attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. Its documentation shows a retrying RTMP output example, but that does not establish compatibility with every destination or configuration. FIFO queue behavior also matters: dropping packets on overflow lets processing continue but loses stream content; allowing the queue to fill can block encoding. Review the FFmpeg formats documentation before choosing this approach.

When a running service has no sound

Systemd’s process restart policy reacts to process failures; it is not, by itself, proof that the stream is producing audio. If FFmpeg remains active while output is silent or frozen, define a health check that measures the output or detects lack of progress, then decide whether that check should restart the service. The appropriate signal and threshold depend on the output server and deployment; there is no universally applicable command or threshold established here.

Troubleshoot common restart problems

  • The service does not start: inspect systemctl status and the unit’s journal logs. Check the executable path, file permissions, working directory, input path, and whether the selected formats are supported.
  • It restarts but immediately fails again: a restart policy cannot correct an invalid input, incompatible output settings, rejected credentials, or a destination that is unavailable. Use the FFmpeg error in the journal to diagnose the cause.
  • The stream stops after a clean stop: that is expected with Restart=on-failure; an intentional stop is not an eligible failure.
  • The service is active but the audience hears silence: process status alone does not establish output health. Add a destination-appropriate health check.
  • FFmpeg suspends when run in the background: use -nostdin or redirect standard input as described above.
  • A connection retry flag is rejected or has no effect: confirm the input protocol and FFmpeg build; reconnect options are protocol-specific and do not replace process supervision.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your sleep-sounds recording is uploaded video for a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining FFmpeg on a home or rented Linux host. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube only, not live camera input. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
