To run a babbling-brook video continuously on YouTube, loop a rights-cleared video and audio source in a streaming encoder such as OBS, connect it to YouTube Live with your stream URL and key, then check the preview and stream health. Before you start: check channel access and content rights
Confirm YouTube Live is enabled
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first time you enable livestreaming, activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the intended launch time. See YouTube’s encoder livestream setup guidance.
Use footage and audio you can broadcast
Use your own brook footage and recording, or material whose permission explicitly covers livestreaming and any replay you retain. Finding a nature recording online does not make it free to rebroadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder or lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright and its Terms of Service.
If you record the brook yourself, a microphone is optional: it is useful for capturing original sound, but unnecessary if you already have a suitable recording you have rights to use. YouTube lists microphones among possible encoder hardware, without endorsing a particular model.

Make a continuous brook source in OBS
Prepare the video and audio
Choose a video that can repeat without an abrupt visual or audio jump, and confirm that the scene includes both picture and sound. In OBS, add the video as a media source and enable its repeat or loop option in that source’s properties. The exact control depends on the source type and OBS version; if you use a playlist or another encoder, configure its repeat behavior there and test it rather than assuming it loops automatically. OBS is free to use; consult its official help for current interface details.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS as the connection protocol, supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video encoding, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval. Its bitrate recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 240p–720p and 30 fps, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps; do not apply that number to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the matching recommendation.

Set the resolution and frame rate to suit the source and the sustained upload capacity available where the encoder runs. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. A connection that only reaches the target bitrate intermittently is a poor choice for an unattended broadcast. Its live streaming tips cover testing and bandwidth.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and start the broadcast
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room. YouTube may show different screens depending on the channel and current Studio interface.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding OBS streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it allows an encoder to connect to your stream, so do not share or publish it.
- Start sending the source. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming signal and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview to confirm the brook image and sound are both present.
- Go live and monitor. Start the broadcast from Live Control Room when the preview and stream health look right. Keep checking the picture, audio, and connection rather than treating a successful start as proof that the stream will remain healthy indefinitely.

Plan for continuous playback and replay limits
A local encoder needs a live computer and network
With OBS running locally, the computer must remain powered on, the encoder must stay open, and the internet connection must keep uploading. Power or network interruptions can stop the feed. Test the setup and watch YouTube’s stream health; if you need unattended operation, account for how you will detect and recover from a failure.
A 24/7 live feed is not a guaranteed 24-hour replay
YouTube warns: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a replay matters, record a local backup and check that the recording file is growing during the broadcast. Preserve the original source too, so you can make a usable archive if YouTube does not capture the live stream. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions
Having permission to broadcast a recording does not guarantee YouTube will treat a repeated ambience stream as monetizable. YouTube’s policy, updated July 15, 2025, describes repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content”; highly repetitive or interchangeable videos without enough distinct creative, educational, or other value may be ineligible for monetization. That is a policy risk, not a guarantee that every ambient stream will be rejected. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies and make the content meaningfully your own rather than assuming continuous playback alone qualifies.

- You cannot go live: Check channel verification and whether a livestream restriction applies. If livestreaming was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- YouTube shows no incoming signal: Confirm OBS is streaming, and recheck that the server URL and stream key match the stream you created in Live Control Room. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The preview has no sound: Verify the media source’s audio is enabled and reaches OBS’s output mix. Check the YouTube preview before going live.
- The stream buffers or loses health: Reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the upload connection can sustain. Test again and leave the recommended bandwidth headroom rather than using the connection’s full measured capacity.
- The brook clip stops instead of repeating: Check the repeat setting on the specific media source or playlist. Loop behavior is encoder- and source-dependent; test beyond the clip’s full duration.
- The stream is interrupted for a copyright match: Stop using the matched material unless you have the necessary rights, and contact the rights holder about YouTube Content ID allowlisting if you do. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
- The livestream has no usable archive: For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube may not capture it. Keep a local recording when you need a replay and verify the recording during the stream.
