Your encoder must also send EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data; choosing the YouTube setting alone does not generate captions.
YouTube also documents a separate workflow in which supported software sends captions using HTTP POSTs. Its instructions cover live events, not a special 24/7 caption mode, so test your chosen setup at startup, while live, and through any planned restart or stream boundary.
Set up embedded captions in Live Control Room

In YouTube Studio, create or open the encoder stream in Live Control Room.

Open the stream’s Settings, select the Setup tab, and find Closed captions.

Select Embedded 608/708 and save.

In your encoder, select EIA-608/CEA-708 output (which may be labelled “embedded”). Confirm that caption text is being generated and carried in the outgoing stream. Depending on the setup, an encoder may read captions from a file or encode them in real time.

Check the stream preview, then verify that viewers can turn captions on and see them. While live, monitor stream health and messages.
YouTube’s guidance says captions must be sent to YouTube; enabling the setting in Live Control Room is not enough by itself.
Use the HTTP captions workflow instead
If your captioning setup uses supported software to send captions separately, YouTube’s event instructions describe an HTTP POST workflow using a Captions Ingestion URL.

In the stream’s Advanced settings, add a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, as specified by the event procedure.

Turn on closed captions and copy the Captions Ingestion URL.

Configure supported captioning software to send captions to that URL using HTTP POSTs, then test that captions reach the stream and can be enabled by viewers.
Verify the current interface labels and confirm that your particular software supports YouTube’s workflow before deployment. The event instructions do not establish that every captioning tool is compatible.

Choose the caption path that matches your setup

These are workflow options, not endorsements of a particular encoder or captioning vendor. If your current encoder cannot send embedded captions, look for a device that explicitly supports EIA-608/CEA-708 and verify compatibility with your full setup before buying.
Plan for continuous operation and stream boundaries
YouTube’s caption setup guidance explains live-event workflows; it does not describe a dedicated uninterrupted 24/7 caption mode. Treat captions on a continuous channel as an integration to validate, particularly if your production restarts or creates successive live sessions. Confirm captions at the start, during operation, and after each planned boundary or restart; continuity is not established by the setup instructions.
For embedded 608/708 captions, YouTube says the standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for this workflow. Plan on one track rather than assuming you can send several language tracks to viewers.
There is also an archive consideration for long broadcasts: YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived as a single complete video.

Troubleshoot missing or interrupted captions

The caption option is enabled, but no words appear: Check that the encoder or captioning software is actually generating and sending caption data. The YouTube setting does not create text.

Embedded captions are not visible: Confirm that Live Control Room is set to Embedded 608/708 and the encoder is sending EIA-608/CEA-708 data in the outgoing stream. Check the preview and viewer caption control.

HTTP captions do not arrive: Confirm that the software supports YouTube’s HTTP POST workflow, that it is using the copied Captions Ingestion URL, and that the event procedure’s 30- or 60-second broadcast delay is configured.

Captions fail after a restart or session change: Test the transition and verify the caption configuration and delivery path for the new session. YouTube’s event guidance does not guarantee continuity across restarts.

You expect multiple embedded languages: YouTube currently supports one caption track for the embedded 608/708 workflow, despite the standard’s capacity for up to four language tracks.
