How to Send Raspberry Pi FFmpeg Alerts When YouTube Live Goes Offline

Monitor FFmpeg locally and YouTube remotely to distinguish a stopped encoder from a stream YouTube has actually stopped receiving.

Use two independent checks: monitor FFmpeg on the Raspberry Pi to detect a stopped process or stalled output, and check YouTube’s Live Streaming API to see whether YouTube is receiving the stream and what health state it reports. A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving video. Treat a recovery as confirmed only after YouTube reports the stream as active again.

What each alert can—and cannot—tell you

Local and YouTube-side monitoring answer different questions. FFmpeg process monitoring tells you whether the encoder process is running; progress monitoring, if configured, can show whether its output is advancing. YouTube’s API tells you what YouTube has recorded about the stream’s activity and health. Neither a running process nor a healthy Raspberry Pi proves that viewers can watch the broadcast.

Signal What it tells you What it does not prove
FFmpeg process state Whether the local encoder process appears to be running or has exited. That FFmpeg is successfully sending data to YouTube.
FFmpeg progress, if configured Whether the monitored local output appears to be advancing. That YouTube has received or is publicly playing that output.
YouTube API stream status YouTube’s recorded stream lifecycle and receipt state. That the public playback experience is working for every viewer.
YouTube API health status Configuration-related health information and severity reported by YouTube. A complete diagnosis of why data is missing, especially when the status is noData.

Understand YouTube’s status fields before setting alert rules

The YouTube Live Streaming API’s streamStatus and healthStatus.status fields describe different things. The API lists active, created, error, inactive, and ready as stream statuses. It defines active as the state in which the user is receiving data via the stream. The health field uses good, ok, bad, and noData: good means no configuration issue at warning severity or worse; ok means no error-severity configuration issue; bad indicates an error-severity issue; and noData means YouTube’s backend has no stream health information. See Google’s LiveStreams API reference for the field definitions.

Do not treat a health warning as identical to an offline stream, or treat noData alone as proof of a specific fault. Record both fields, along with the observation time and previous state. That makes an alert such as “status changed to inactive; health is noData” more useful than a generic “YouTube is down” message.

Build a two-layer monitor on the Raspberry Pi

Run a small monitor or wrapper alongside the FFmpeg encoder. It should independently inspect the local encoder and YouTube’s API-reported state. You can implement the API check yourself or use a companion service, but verify that any project you choose meets your security, maintenance, and operational needs.

1. Watch the local encoder

  • Detect when the FFmpeg process exits, and report the exit event with its observation time.
  • If you have configured FFmpeg progress reporting, check that progress continues to advance. A live process whose progress has stopped is a different condition from a process that has exited.
  • Do not put the YouTube stream key in monitor output, logs, screenshots, or notifications.

2. Check YouTube’s view of the stream

  • Use the YouTube Live Streaming API to retrieve the stream status and health status for the stream you are monitoring. The API reference documents these fields at Google for Developers.
  • Keep API observations separate from local process observations; they have different meanings and can disagree.
  • Protect OAuth credentials as carefully as the stream key. Do not copy credentials into public configuration, commands, logs, or alerts.

3. Apply a persistence rule and send a useful notification

Choose a persistence rule appropriate to the stream’s needs rather than alerting on every transient observation. A shorter polling interval can reduce detection delay but creates more polling and may expose brief state changes. Requiring a condition to persist can reduce transient alerts but delays notification. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal polling interval, stale-progress timeout, or retry count, so validate chosen values in your own setup.

Include the stream identifier or a safe human-readable label, which signal fired, the observed status and health values where available, the timestamp, and whether the condition has persisted. Test that the notification channel actually reaches the operator. The specific setup steps depend on the notification service you choose.

4. Alert on recovery only after YouTube confirms receipt

A restarted FFmpeg process is not proof of recovery. Send a recovery notice only after the YouTube-side check reports active again. If the process is running but YouTube does not report an active stream, keep the incident open and report the discrepancy rather than declaring the broadcast restored.

Recovery: distinguish local reconnects from YouTube recovery

FFmpeg documents reconnect controls including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, and retry-limit options in its protocol documentation. These controls are documented for HTTP behavior; they should not be presented as a guaranteed fix for a YouTube RTMP publishing failure. Choose recovery behavior for the protocol and failure mode you actually use, then confirm the result through YouTube’s status rather than relying on a local restart message.

For a Raspberry Pi implementation example, YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine documents a Pi Zero companion that polls YouTube status and health using read-only YouTube access and presents local status displays including OFFLINE, AUTH, READY, LIVE, and WARNING. YouTube-AutoEncoder is another example of a Raspberry Pi-targeted FFmpeg/systemd streaming project with YouTube Live API integration. These repositories are examples, not guarantees of current maintenance, security, availability, or suitability; review them before use and do not expose credentials while following setup instructions.

Troubleshoot alerts that are missing or misleading

  • FFmpeg is running, but YouTube is not active: local process state alone does not establish receipt. Check the API-reported status and health, retain both observations, and avoid marking the stream recovered until YouTube reports active.
  • YouTube reports noData: this means the backend lacks health information, not that the API has identified a specific cause. Check the separate stream status and local encoder signals before choosing a diagnosis.
  • The monitor reports a health warning but the stream is active: preserve both fields in the alert. Health describes configuration issues and severity; activity describes the stream’s lifecycle/receipt state.
  • Alerts fire on brief state changes: review your persistence rule and polling frequency. Longer persistence can filter transients but delays notice; shorter intervals can detect changes sooner while increasing polling and notification activity.
  • A recovery alert arrives after FFmpeg restarts: change the recovery condition so it requires YouTube’s API to report the stream as active, not merely a live local process.
  • Credentials appear in an alert or log: remove the exposed material from those destinations and review access to them. Keep stream keys and OAuth credentials out of logs, screenshots, notifications, and public configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the underlying problem is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops the uploaded video and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Your video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live stream.
