How to Set GOP Size for an FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream

For YouTube Live over RTMP/RTMPS, aim for a 2-second GOP and keep it at 4 seconds or less. Convert that interval to frames using your actual encoded frame rate, request closed GOP behavior, and test YouTube stream health.

For a standard YouTube Live stream sent over RTMP or RTMPS, target a 2-second keyframe interval and do not exceed 4 seconds. With FFmpeg encoders that express GOP size in frames, use -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps. Request a closed GOP; YouTube does not support open GOPs.

What GOP size should you use?

YouTube’s live encoder settings call this “Keyframe frequency” and recommend 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds. For a typical RTMP or RTMPS workflow, set the GOP interval to 2 seconds. The frame-count value depends on the encoded frame rate: GOP frames = interval in seconds × encoded frames per second. [YouTube Help, encoder settings; FFmpeg codecs documentation]

Encoded frame rate 2-second GOP 4-second ceiling
30 fps 60 frames (-g 60) 120 frames (-g 120)
60 fps 120 frames (-g 120) 240 frames (-g 240)

These examples assume a frame-count-based GOP option. Confirm the actual encoded frame rate rather than calculating from the input’s nominal or assumed rate.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Here, -r 30 requests a 30 fps output and -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP—2 seconds at that rate. FFmpeg documents g or gop_size as GOP-size controls for relevant encoders, and its cgop flag requests closed-GOP behavior. Exact option support and behavior can vary by encoder and build, so check the selected encoder’s help and verify the resulting stream. [FFmpeg codecs documentation]

Adjust for the output frame rate

If you encode at 60 fps and want the same 2-second interval, use a 120-frame GOP, such as -r 60 -g 120 with an encoder that supports those options. If your output rate is variable or differs from the requested rate, do not rely on a calculation based on an assumed frame rate; inspect the actual encoded stream.

RTMP/RTMPS and DASH have different stated ceilings

For the usual RTMP/RTMPS workflow, follow YouTube Help’s general encoder setting: 2 seconds recommended, no more than 4 seconds. YouTube’s Live API health guidance also calls for a keyframe frequency of 4 seconds or less. [YouTube Help; YouTube Live API health-status documentation]

The YouTube DASH ingestion guide has a protocol-specific rule: GOP size should be about 2 seconds and less than 8 seconds, and GOPs must be closed. Do not use DASH’s under-8-second ceiling as the limit for a standard RTMP/RTMPS stream. [YouTube DASH ingestion guide]

Test the stream and read YouTube’s health messages

  1. Confirm output frame rate. Calculate the frame count from the rate being encoded, not merely the source file’s frame rate.
  2. Check encoder support. Verify that the chosen FFmpeg encoder recognizes its GOP-size and closed-GOP controls; wrappers expose different private options.
  3. Run a test stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
  4. Inspect diagnostics. YouTube health messages can flag long or very short GOPs, open GOP behavior, or different keyframe frequencies between primary and backup feeds. Very small GOPs can reduce image quality.
  5. Account for ingestion errors. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can make reported GOP sizes incorrect, so investigate the full stream path if a diagnostic conflicts with your encoder configuration.

[YouTube encoder settings; YouTube Live API health-status documentation]

Common GOP problems and fixes

  • Keyframes are too far apart: Recalculate frames using the actual output frame rate and set the interval to 2 seconds; keep RTMP/RTMPS at or below 4 seconds.
  • YouTube reports open GOP: Request closed GOP behavior if the encoder supports it, then verify the stream. YouTube’s health guidance identifies open GOP as unsupported.
  • Primary and backup feeds disagree: Align their keyframe frequencies and test both paths.
  • Health reports an implausible GOP size: Check for ingestion errors before concluding the encoder is emitting the reported interval.
  • Image quality worsens after shortening the GOP: YouTube warns that very small GOPs can reduce image quality; use the recommended 2-second interval rather than making the GOP unnecessarily short.
