To stream a prerecorded playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg and NVIDIA NVENC, put the clips in an ordered concat-demuxer manifest, loop that input, and send an H.264/AAC RTMPS feed to the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. First verify that your FFmpeg build and NVIDIA driver expose h264_nvenc; the command below is a starting template, not a guarantee of compatibility with every computer or playlist.

What you need before starting

  • An NVIDIA GPU and driver combination that supports NVENC, plus an FFmpeg build that lists h264_nvenc.
  • Video files on the machine running FFmpeg, arranged in the order you want them played.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream quality.
  • A YouTube channel with access to create a live stream in YouTube Studio.

Playlist playback and encoding are separate jobs: the manifest tells FFmpeg which files to read and in what order, while FFmpeg encodes and transmits the outgoing stream. NVENC is hardware encoding; its presence is not guaranteed just because a computer has an NVIDIA GPU.

1. Verify FFmpeg and NVENC support

In a terminal or command prompt, check the installed version and available encoders:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders

In the encoder list, look for h264_nvenc. If it is absent, this FFmpeg binary cannot use the encoder. Install or build an FFmpeg version with NVENC support and check that the NVIDIA driver is compatible. If the encoder is listed but fails at startup, the installed driver, GPU, or runtime environment may still be incompatible; read the error output rather than assuming the stream is running.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

2. Create an ordered playlist manifest

Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt in the working directory. Put this header first, followed by one file entry per clip in playback order:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'

Use paths that are valid from the directory where FFmpeg will run. For paths containing spaces or unusual characters, quote and escape them correctly for the concat-demuxer format. The manifest uses the concat demuxer, which is suited to listing files as a sequence when their streams are compatible. Similar-looking files can still differ in resolution, frame rate, codecs, or audio layout, so inspect the media and test transitions before relying on a long broadcast.

When clips do not match

Do not assume that dissimilar clips will join seamlessly just because the output is being encoded. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer from the concat filter and recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed. A filter-based workflow can normalize streams before joining, but requires a different command built around the actual input properties. A file-level concat protocol is another distinct option for formats that support it; it is not interchangeable with the concat demuxer.

3. Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the workflow available for your channel.
  2. Copy the stream’s server or ingest URL and its stream key from the stream settings. Use the RTMPS server URL where available.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it, commit it to a shared script, or paste it into a public support post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.

For scheduled broadcasts, wait for the incoming preview and use the Live Control Room’s Go live control if the selected workflow requires it. When ending the broadcast, follow the interface’s stop-stream instructions as well as stopping FFmpeg.

4. Start the looping NVENC stream

Use this as a starting template, replacing the URL and key placeholders with the values for your YouTube stream:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -c:v h264_nvenc -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

-re reads the input at its native playback rate rather than as fast as the machine can process it. -stream_loop -1 requests an endless loop of the input. -f concat selects the manifest-based concat demuxer, and -safe 0 allows paths that the demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe. Only use that option with a playlist file you control. The video and audio options select H.264 NVENC video and AAC audio; -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate.

This example does not prescribe a video bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or scaling filter because those depend on the source, desired output, and available upload capacity. Check the source streams and choose settings consistent with YouTube’s guidance and the connection you can sustain. The example is not a tested command for every shell, FFmpeg build, GPU, or playlist.

Keep the stream key out of shared history

The command shows the key inline only to make the destination format clear. A real key in a command can remain in shell history or appear in process listings, depending on the operating system and how FFmpeg is launched. Use a private configuration or credential-handling approach appropriate to your system, and verify how your FFmpeg build accepts the destination. Never place the real key in an article, public script, or shared log.

5. Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, supports H.264 video and recommends constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan, square pixels, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio, with 44.1 kHz recommended for stereo and 128 Kbps recommended for stereo audio.

Those are configuration recommendations, not a bitrate prescription for every stream. Set the output resolution and frame rate to suit the source and a reliable upload connection, then select a video bitrate appropriate to that combination. YouTube transcodes live video for playback in multiple formats, but that does not make an unstable incoming feed reliable. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the chosen output and monitor the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.

6. Test before going public

  1. Run a private or unlisted test with representative clips and sound.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview for moving video, audible sound, and correct clip order.
  3. Watch stream health while the test is running; confirm that the connection can sustain the selected quality.
  4. Check transitions between files, including the end of the last clip and return to the first clip.
  5. Only switch a scheduled broadcast live after the preview and stream status are satisfactory.

YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and movement and choosing a quality your upload connection can reliably sustain. A local command starting without errors does not by itself confirm a healthy YouTube broadcast.

Troubleshooting common failures

FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable

Cause: The installed binary lacks NVENC support, or the GPU and driver are not usable by that build. Fix: Confirm h264_nvenc appears in ffmpeg -encoders, then check the FFmpeg build, GPU support, and NVIDIA driver compatibility.

The playlist fails to open or stops at a clip

Cause: A manifest path is invalid, improperly quoted, or rejected by the concat demuxer; a later file may also have incompatible streams. Fix: Check each path from the FFmpeg working directory, correct the manifest quoting, and test the clips in sequence. Use -safe 0 only for a manifest you control. If the inputs need normalization, build a concat-filter workflow suited to their actual streams.

The YouTube preview never appears

Cause: The destination URL or key may be wrong, the encoder may not have connected, or FFmpeg may have failed before transmitting. Fix: Recheck the URL and key copied from the correct YouTube stream, inspect FFmpeg’s error output, and confirm that the encoder process is still running. If a key may have been exposed, reset it before retrying.

Video is choppy or stream health is poor

Cause: The upload connection may not sustain the configured output, or the encoding workload may exceed the system’s capacity. Fix: Lower the selected output quality to a level the connection can reliably carry, verify that NVENC is actually in use, and run another test while monitoring stream health.

There is no audio or it sounds wrong

Cause: A clip may lack an audio stream or use an audio layout that does not match the rest of the playlist. Fix: Inspect the source streams, test with representative sound, and normalize or filter dissimilar audio inputs rather than assuming the manifest makes them consistent.

The stream works, but clip boundaries glitch

Cause: The input files differ in stream properties or timing. Fix: Test every transition and use a filter-based concatenation and normalization workflow where needed. Do not promise gapless playback without testing the actual files.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Having the files locally does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast them. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s current rules for live streams, copyright, and monetization. Replaying content continuously is not a substitute for rights or for meeting YouTube’s channel and monetization policies. The copyright safety checklist can help you review permissions before broadcasting.

Cost and practical trade-offs

The FFmpeg workflow avoids a cloud-looping service fee only if you already have compatible hardware and a computer, power, and internet connection available for the full broadcast. The machine must stay on and capable of encoding and uploading for as long as the stream runs. Buying an NVIDIA GPU solely for NVENC is a separate hardware cost; compatibility depends on the particular GPU, driver, and FFmpeg build.

For planning, StreamNeo provides an upload-time calculator and a cloud vs PC cost calculator.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, not on your computer or OBS setup.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and support from the StreamNeo team. Plans have the same features; only the billing length changes. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
