First identify what “playlist” means in your command: an FFmpeg concat list, an HLS manifest, or a YouTube playlist handled by yt-dlp. Then check which program stops advancing and inspect the log at the transition.
Start by identifying the playlist type
Find the complete command and the input supplied after -i. A local text file, an HLS .m3u8 manifest, and a yt-dlp playlist piped into FFmpeg use different workflows; their fixes are not interchangeable.
- A text file listing media files: likely the FFmpeg concat demuxer. Check its syntax, the listed files, stream compatibility, and durations.
- An
.m3u8file: HLS. Determine whether FFmpeg is reading a source playlist or publishing HLS segments. - A command using yt-dlp and a pipe: check whether yt-dlp advances to the next playlist entry and whether its output pipe stays open before changing FFmpeg options.
Record whether FFmpeg exits, reports an error, or remains running but stops producing video. The full command and log lines around the transition are needed to diagnose a specific case.
Fix a concat-demuxer input
The concat demuxer reads a script and demuxes the listed files sequentially. A basic script looks like this:

file 'video-02.mp4'- Check the script and input path. Confirm that the second file is listed and that the FFmpeg command points to this script. For automatic format detection,
ffconcat version 1.0must be the exact first line. Quote or escape paths with spaces or special characters correctly. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation. - Compare the media streams. Use
ffprobeor FFmpeg’s input logs to compare the first and second files: stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, sample rates, channel layouts, and other relevant parameters. FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer documentation says: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” - Check durations before changing timestamps. The demuxer uses each file’s duration to place the next file’s timestamps. An incorrect or unavailable duration can cause boundary timing problems. If you know the correct duration, a
durationdirective in the script can override the stored value; verify the duration rather than guessing. Since timestamp adjustment is global, streams of different lengths can also create gaps. - Choose a method that matches the files. Stream copy with
-c copyavoids re-encoding, but it cannot make incompatible streams match. Make the source files share suitable stream properties, or consider the concat filter, which joins decoded media and may require re-encoding. Filtering takes more compute, and encoding can change quality.
For FFmpeg’s distinction between concatenation methods, see its FAQ. Do not assume stream copy will repair an incompatibility: it preserves encoded packets rather than normalizing them.
Trace a yt-dlp playlist piped into FFmpeg
In this workflow, playlist iteration and FFmpeg’s handling of the incoming media are separate questions. Capture yt-dlp’s progress output and confirm that it reports moving to the next entry. yt-dlp documents playlist processing and piping media to standard output in its usage and options documentation and README output-template documentation.

- Run or inspect the downloader step independently and verify that it advances beyond the first playlist item.
- Check whether the pipe remains open while the next item is processed, and note which program exits or stops producing data first.
- Test the downstream FFmpeg step separately when possible, so you can locate the failure on one side of the pipe.
- Make sure the intended program owns playlist iteration. Processing one media item through a pipe is not by itself the same as iterating over a playlist.
YouTube can supply separate audio and video formats, so inspect what yt-dlp actually passes downstream. Avoid adding arbitrary retry flags without an error or log that points to a retryable failure.
Handle an HLS manifest as HLS
Do not use concat-script syntax for an HLS manifest. First establish whether FFmpeg is consuming a source HLS playlist or creating a live stream for upload; those are different directions of traffic. YouTube’s HLS live-ingestion guide describes requirements for uploaded media playlists and segments. Those publishing requirements do not, by themselves, explain why a local concat list stops at its second file.

Use the transition logs to narrow the failure
- The second filename never appears in FFmpeg’s input or progress logs: verify the concat script path and entries, or check whether yt-dlp advanced to the next item.
- The second file is opened, then playback or output stops: compare its streams with the first file and inspect duration and timestamp information at the boundary.
- FFmpeg stays alive but the pipe is quiet: inspect yt-dlp’s progress and the pipe separately before changing FFmpeg’s output settings.
- The command reads an HLS manifest: diagnose it as HLS, and determine whether it is an input or an upload workflow.
These checks distinguish possible causes; without the command, media metadata, FFmpeg version, and transition logs, no one cause can be confirmed for a particular stream.
