How to Keep a YouTube Stream Running When OBS Closes Unexpectedly

OBS automatic reconnect cannot run after OBS closes. Learn when to use a relaunch workflow, how to test YouTube backup-encoder failover, and what to verify before relying on either.

OBS automatic reconnect can recover some network interruptions while OBS is still running; it cannot restart OBS after the application closes. To protect a YouTube live event from an OBS crash, you need an independent backup encoder or a tested restart-and-recovery setup. Check YouTube Live Control Room settings and rehearse the exact handoff before relying on it—YouTube does not promise a universal crash-recovery grace period or automatic recovery behavior for every OBS failure.

First identify what stopped working

The right fix depends on whether OBS lost its network connection, the OBS process exited, or you need the program to continue without interruption. These are different failure modes: a retry inside OBS cannot run after OBS itself has closed.

What happened What may help What it does not guarantee
Brief internet interruption; OBS remains open OBS automatic reconnect, with retry settings suited to the interruption you expect That retries continue indefinitely or that YouTube preserves every broadcast state
OBS crashed or closed A watchdog or operating-system task that detects the exit and relaunches a configured OBS instance That YouTube will resume the intended event or that viewers will see a seamless return
Continuous output is required despite OBS failure A separately configured backup encoder, with YouTube playback failover rehearsed in advance That backup hardware alone will take over without configuration and a successful test

An OBS forum user describes the practical frustration of losing internet and having to check the YouTube page, stop the OBS stream, return to the Go Live page, and start OBS again. That account illustrates one creator’s workflow, not a guarantee that all streams behave the same way.

For a network drop while OBS stays open

Enable OBS automatic reconnect

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the automatic reconnect controls.
  2. Enable automatic reconnect, then choose a retry count and delay appropriate to the interruptions you expect.
  3. Test by interrupting the network briefly while OBS remains open. Check whether OBS reconnects, whether the correct YouTube event receives the feed, and whether playback and audio return as expected.

OBS documents automatic reconnect as an Advanced feature. Its output API describes a retry count and starting retry interval for outputs that support reconnect. Those mechanics do not mean retries will continue forever or that YouTube will retain the same live state in every case.

For an OBS crash or unexpected close

Use relaunch automation only as one part of recovery

OBS cannot reconnect after its process exits. OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter, which can be used as a building block in an operating-system task or watchdog that starts a configured OBS instance. A relaunch is not, by itself, an end-to-end recovery system: something must detect the failure, launch the right OBS profile and scene, connect to the intended YouTube event, and confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed.

  • Keep the relaunch configuration tied to the correct OBS profile, scene collection, and event.
  • Decide how the monitor detects a true crash rather than a brief network interruption.
  • Verify the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health after a relaunch; do not assume the player has recovered just because OBS says it is streaming.
  • Test the whole sequence before using it for a scheduled or important broadcast.

YouTube’s documentation does not establish one grace period or automatic recovery outcome that applies to every OBS crash and event configuration.

For continuity: configure a separate backup encoder

If the program must continue when OBS fails, use an independent backup encoder and verify that YouTube switches playback to it. YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.”

  1. Configure the primary and backup encoders for the intended YouTube event using YouTube’s encoder and backup-encoder guidance.
  2. Check that the backup is independent of the OBS process. Where practical, consider whether it shares the computer, network connection, or power source that could cause the primary failure.
  3. Run an unlisted or otherwise suitable rehearsal. Stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then watch the YouTube player to confirm it rolls over to the backup.
  4. Check the returned picture and sound, Live Control Room preview, and stream-health indicators. If local recording is part of your recovery plan, verify that the archive file is usable too.

A backup device does not automatically take over merely because it is connected. The event configuration and player failover must work in a rehearsal. YouTube’s guidance supports testing this behavior, but it does not establish a specific encoder’s reliability percentage, price, or hands-free compatibility.

Check YouTube’s event settings and stream key

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the event’s auto-start and auto-stop choices. YouTube describes these as controls for starting or stopping streaming from the encoder. Test the exact choices with the channel’s scheduled or live workflow; the labels do not remove the need to verify what happens when the encoder closes and returns.

If OBS restarts but the expected feed does not appear, check the Live Control Room and confirm that OBS is sending to the intended event or stream before changing credentials. A stream key is the encoder’s credential and destination information for sending a feed. YouTube documents resetting a key for a compromised key, not as a routine crash-recovery step.

Rehearse safely and end the event deliberately

  • Use an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test event to exercise network recovery, process relaunch, or encoder failover before relying on it live.
  • Monitor the preview and stream-health indicators, and confirm that both video and audio return in the intended way.
  • If local recording is part of the plan, verify the resulting file rather than assuming that a live stream archive is equivalent to a local copy.
  • When the broadcast is over, stop the encoder deliberately and confirm the event has ended as intended. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe stopping encoder content as part of ending a stream and say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a promise that an interrupted event will resume.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely issue What to do
OBS reconnects from a network blip, but a crash leaves the stream down Automatic reconnect only helps while OBS remains open Use a tested relaunch workflow for recovery or an independent backup encoder for continuity.
OBS reopens and reports streaming, but YouTube shows no expected feed The wrong event or stream may be selected, or the Live Control Room state may not match the workflow Confirm the event and stream selection in YouTube Studio, then check the preview and stream health before changing the key.
The backup encoder is running, but viewers do not see it Backup configuration or player failover has not been verified Rehearse the primary-stop or Ethernet-unplug test and confirm the player rolls over.
A relaunch starts OBS but not the complete broadcast recovery Starting OBS is only one step; detection, correct configuration, event connection, and verification also matter Test the full watchdog or task sequence and define how someone will confirm YouTube is receiving the feed.
A UPS is proposed for an OBS software crash A UPS addresses power interruption, not an application failure by itself Use power protection only when power loss is the actual failure mode; use software monitoring or an independent encoder for an OBS crash.
