You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch an encoder that sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but scheduling the process is not the same as guaranteeing a public broadcast or automatic recovery. You need a scheduled or active YouTube broadcast, an encoder configured with the stream URL and key, a repeatable video input, and a task tested under the Windows account and conditions that will run it.
What the scheduled task does—and what it does not
Microsoft describes schtasks as a way to schedule programs, start and stop tasks on demand, and view or change scheduled tasks. Task Scheduler can start your encoder at a chosen time. It does not, by itself, ensure that the encoder can access the video, connect to YouTube, make the broadcast public, or restart after a failure.
Think of the workflow as separate parts: YouTube provides the broadcast and ingest details; the encoder loops and sends the video; Windows starts that encoder. YouTube’s manual scheduled-stream flow asks you to start the encoder, wait for a preview, then click Go live. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop controls in stream settings; when enabled, they can change that flow. Check and test the settings for the specific broadcast rather than assuming the Windows task makes the transition.
Prepare the YouTube Live broadcast
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable and test it before the scheduled event.
- Set the event details. Choose the title, visibility and other broadcast details. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page and let viewers set reminders.
- Choose the start behavior. Decide whether you will manually inspect the preview and click Go live, or use YouTube’s encoder auto-start settings. Auto-start is a stream setting, not a property guaranteed by Task Scheduler.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Enter the current server URL and key in your encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a secret. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Choose an encoder and configure the loop
You need an encoder that can send a prerecorded video repeatedly to YouTube. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; expensive equipment is not required to get started. Select a software encoder with a documented repeat or loop-input feature, and verify that the option applies to the file input used for this broadcast.

Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation shows real-time file input and an RTMP output in this example:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
This is a protocol example, not a YouTube-ready command: replace the sample input and output with your actual media and YouTube ingest details. It also does not make the file repeat indefinitely. The documentation cited here does not establish one universal infinite-loop syntax for every FFmpeg build, so do not treat this example as a complete loop recipe. Use a loop option documented for your installed build or choose an encoder whose repeat-input control is clearly documented. Validate the exact configuration with your FFmpeg version, media file, key type and Live Control Room settings before relying on it.

Set video and bitrate deliberately
YouTube’s encoder recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS include a two-second keyframe interval and constant bitrate (CBR); its guidance says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval. For 1080p at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are recommendations, not guarantees. Match the encoder output to the codec and resolution you actually use and to the upload capacity available to the Windows PC.
Check the encoder preview and YouTube stream-health status during a test. A file that plays correctly on the PC can still produce a poor live feed if the network cannot sustain the selected output bitrate or the audio/video settings are unsuitable.
Configure Windows Task Scheduler
Create a task that starts the encoder using its saved executable path, arguments and intended Windows account. Microsoft’s schtasks documentation covers creating, querying, starting and ending tasks, but it does not establish a universal Task Scheduler GUI configuration for streaming. The task’s user account and execution context matter: verify that they can read the media and encoder configuration, reach the network, and access any resources the encoder needs at the trigger time.

- Use full paths. Specify the full path to the encoder executable and media file rather than relying on a working directory or path lookup that may differ when the task runs.
- Choose the account intentionally. Use the account whose permissions and access match the intended run. Test whether the encoder works in that task context, not only when launched interactively from your usual desktop.
- Set the trigger to match the broadcast. Schedule the task with enough lead time to connect and allow YouTube to receive the feed before the intended public start. Confirm whether the broadcast expects a manual Go live click or has auto-start enabled.
- Run a test task. Start it on demand, then query its status and inspect its output and logs. Verify the video, audio, YouTube preview and stream health, and confirm that the task can access the required files and network under the actual account.
Microsoft lists the schtasks command documentation as applicable to Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server editions including 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025; the page was last updated February 3, 2023. Exact task behavior can still depend on your account, task configuration and local environment.
Make background execution manageable
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin for background execution because it prevents input checks that expect an interactive terminal. On Windows, the FAQ also documents redirecting standard input to NUL. Ensure the chosen approach matches your FFmpeg invocation and task setup.
- Keep logs so a failed connection, missing file or encoder error can be diagnosed.
- Define how the running encoder is stopped, and confirm the stop procedure during testing.
- Prevent a second scheduled run from starting another encoder process while the first is still sending the stream.
- Do not assume a scheduled task will restart the encoder, restore a dropped YouTube connection or keep a broadcast live indefinitely. Those outcomes depend on configuration and are not guaranteed by scheduling alone.
Choose how YouTube starts the public broadcast
| Approach | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual go-live | The scheduled task starts the encoder. After the preview appears, an operator checks it and clicks Go live in Live Control Room. | A person can catch a bad feed before it becomes public, but someone must be present to confirm the start. |
| Encoder auto-start and auto-stop | YouTube’s stream settings can allow the encoder to start or stop the broadcast when those controls are enabled. | This reduces manual steps, but must be configured and tested for the particular broadcast. Task Scheduler alone does not enable or guarantee it. |
Test the complete schedule before relying on it
YouTube recommends testing the setup, checking the preview, monitoring stream health and preparing the encoder ahead of an event. Test under the account and timing conditions the scheduled task will use—not just by clicking the encoder in an already-open desktop session.

The task runs, but YouTube shows no preview
Check that the encoder has the current YouTube stream URL and key, that it is using the intended output settings, and that the task account can access the network. Run the encoder in the task’s actual context and inspect its logs. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved value.
The preview appears, but the broadcast is not public
In the manual flow, an operator must click Go live after the preview appears. If you expect an automatic start, verify that auto-start is enabled for that stream and test the configured behavior.

The task works interactively but fails on schedule
Compare the scheduled task’s account and execution context with the interactive run. Check full executable and media paths, file permissions, configuration access and network availability at the trigger time. A successful desktop launch does not prove those resources will be available to the scheduled process.
The video does not repeat or the stream ends
The RTMP example above only demonstrates sending a file; it is not an infinite-loop command. Check that the encoder’s documented repeat option is enabled for the chosen input, and test the exact build and configuration through the end of at least one repeat. Do not infer loop behavior from the presence of an RTMP output.
The feed stutters or stream health is poor
Compare the configured resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations and the PC’s available upload capacity. For RTMP/RTMPS, use the recommended two-second keyframe interval and CBR; test the feed and monitor YouTube’s health indicators.
A second stream process starts unexpectedly
Check whether a previous encoder is still running before another task trigger occurs. Use the logs and a clear stop procedure to identify the existing process and avoid sending duplicate sessions from the same setup.

Rights and looped documentaries
Only loop video and audio you have the rights to use. A scheduled repeat does not change the underlying ownership or permission requirements. The sources cited for the technical setup do not determine whether a particular documentary, soundtrack or excerpt is licensed for your channel; verify the rights for each asset before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a Windows PC running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video streamed to YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
