To send prerecorded videos to YouTube Live with GStreamer, build an application-managed pipeline that decodes each playlist item, normalizes its audio and video, joins items in order, encodes and muxes the continuous output, then sends it to YouTube’s ingest URL. GStreamer documents the building blocks, but not a complete arbitrary-playlist player: you must manage file changes, stream compatibility, end-of-stream behavior, and local RTMP/RTMPS support yourself.

What you need to build

The work has two parts: YouTube supplies the current ingest server URL and stream key; your GStreamer application turns a sequence of files into one continuous audio/video feed. The general flow is:

playlist controller → URI decoder → format normalization → sequential switch → encoders → FLV muxer → RTMP/RTMPS sink

For arbitrary MP4, MKV, or other media files, this is an application pipeline rather than a single command that accepts any playlist. GStreamer’s uridecodebin decodes a URI to raw media and creates source pads as streams are discovered. Your application must select the intended audio and video pads, connect them, and manage each item’s lifecycle.

Prepare the YouTube live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the scheduled event you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Live Control Room, not a URL copied from an old example. YouTube describes stream keys as sensitive credentials; keep them out of screenshots, public repositories, and shared scripts. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. If the event is scheduled, start sending the feed and check its preview before selecting Go live, unless the event’s settings handle that action automatically.

Build the playlist pipeline

Decode and normalize each item

For each playlist URI, use uridecodebin or an equivalent version-appropriate decoder path. Its pads are dynamic: the application needs to handle stream discovery and link the chosen video and audio streams. Before joining items, normalize their outputs as needed so the sequence has compatible video dimensions, frame rate and pixel format, plus compatible audio sample rate and channel layout. Handle files with missing audio, different stream layouts, and decode errors deliberately rather than assuming every file has identical tracks.

Join items in playlist order

GStreamer’s concat element joins streams sequentially. It switches to the next requested sink pad when the active input ends with EOS (end-of-stream). Your application must request and link the pads in playlist order and ensure the inputs provide compatible streams. The documented two-source example establishes the element’s basic behavior; it is not a complete recipe for every mixed-format playlist.

Choose end-of-list behavior explicitly. The application can stop after the final item or arrange to start the sequence again. Do not assume concat repeats the playlist on its own.

Encode, mux, and transmit

Encode continuous video and audio in formats accepted by the chosen YouTube ingest protocol, mux the result into FLV, and send it to the ingest server. GStreamer documents rtmpsink for FLV delivery via librtmp; its documented pipeline shape includes flvmux ! rtmpsink. This does not guarantee that every packaged GStreamer and librtmp build supports a secure connection to YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint. Check the plugins and TLS behavior on the machine that will run the event.

Use gst-inspect-1.0 to inspect the locally installed elements and confirm the needed decoders, encoders, muxer, and sink are available. GStreamer’s plugin documentation is a reference for the plugin set; local installation and build options can differ.

Set an output profile YouTube accepts

YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than using one universal value.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream in transit. Follow its RTMPS guidance, but confirm that your installed sink and librtmp build can negotiate TLS with the exact endpoint supplied in Live Control Room. The documentation reviewed here does not establish that compatibility for every build.

Test the complete stream before an event

  1. Use a private or unlisted test stream. Start GStreamer and check that YouTube receives the feed and displays the expected preview.
  2. Watch and listen through item transitions. Check for black frames, missing audio, unexpected gaps, or a failed switch to the next item.
  3. Check stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate.
  4. Test what happens at the end of the playlist and when a file cannot be decoded. Confirm that the application stops or restarts as intended and that errors do not silently leave the event without a feed.
  5. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview before selecting Go live. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; longer streams should not be assumed to receive that automatic archive treatment.

Why multifilesrc is not a general video playlist reader

multifilesrc reads sequentially named files using an indexed pattern, such as img.%04d.png. Its documentation demonstrates numbered PNG images combined into video and includes a loop setting. That sequence model is different from a playlist of unrelated, differently named video files. Use it when the inputs genuinely match its numbered-file and buffer expectations; for ordinary heterogeneous videos, use URI decoding and application-level sequencing.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?

RTMP/RTMPS is a continuous ingest path; YouTube recommends RTMPS. GStreamer documents an RTMP sink path, but the installed sink’s secure-transport compatibility still needs testing. YouTube also accepts HLS ingest, but it is not an automatic fallback for this pipeline: its setup requires HTTPS POST/PUT, MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. The GStreamer sources cited here do not establish a complete GStreamer-to-YouTube HLS recipe. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance before choosing that route.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • No preview in Live Control Room: confirm the current server URL and stream key, verify the sink is connecting to the intended endpoint, and inspect GStreamer output for connection or negotiation errors. A local RTMPS/TLS incompatibility is possible even when the pipeline runs.
  • Pipeline fails when the next file starts: check whether the application handled the decoder’s dynamic pads and linked compatible audio and video streams. Normalize differences in dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, or channel layout before the sequential switch.
  • Picture works but sound is absent or breaks at transitions: confirm each item has the intended audio stream, that it is linked, and that audio output is normalized and encoded continuously.
  • Stream health reports problems: check the selected codec, resolution-specific bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s encoder settings. Also verify available upload capacity, including the recommended 20% headroom.
  • The playlist does not start over: implement the repeat behavior in the application. A loop option documented for multifilesrc does not make concat repeat an arbitrary URI playlist.
  • Stream key may have been exposed: treat it as compromised and reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos playing without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a GStreamer pipeline you maintain. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, streaming the uploaded file as made without re-encoding.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
